In the original Half-life there were not may *quote unquote animals*. I mean sure there were some insects that you could squish, but everything else was either human or of an alien decent. I know far cry isn't a good example, but it has a wild pig and stuff of that nature. I know in a couple HL2 videos we have seen birds, but I am talking more alone the lines of dogs, cats, rats, bats, and other stuff you would see in a post apocalyptic England. I think that they would add to the realism quite a bit. I don't think this has been asked before since i did a search on it..so don't impulse flame me please just cause it sounds like a question that would have already been asked.

Wasn't it a general concensus that City-17 is somewhere near the Caspian?

In the E3 2004 vid we saw what i think are head-crabed dogs (father Gregory (sp?) part). Wouldn't be suprised if we see plain old dogs as well.

I agree adding animals where appropriate would be cool.

On closer inspection of the graveyard screenshots, those "Headcrabbed dogs" actually appear to be decayed human corpses with a different kind of headcrab attatched.

The astronaughts brought back a disease that killed all the cats and dogs. Longing for pets, people took headcrabs into their homes. After learning how smart they are they were eventually turned into servants untill they rebelled and took controle of the planet.

Tonite. We have seen. The Birth. Of the Planet of the CRABS!

In the scene right before the toolshed in the E3 2k4 video you see some things fly over head. At first I thought they were just the normal crows that we've seen before, but now I think they may have been bats. Plus, it was dark out too. I've never seen a bird flying about in the dark. Anyone else notice this?

Ooh, a headcrabbed bat would be sweet!

Of course, it probably wouldn't be able to see where it was going...

Birds don't fly in the dark.. but if they were to it would be closely followed by a *splat* which of course is the sound of them hitting a tree that they couldnt' see.
P.S. This excludes Owls and the like.

I am talking about normal animals though, not headcrabed dogs and stuff.

Weren't there a couple of rats in HL1? I remember there was one in the Hazard Course.....

I'd think the people would've eaten their pets in City 17, they look pretty poor.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were. After all, Valve initially wanted to have friendly/indifferent Xen beasties in HL1, but they never really got around to it (excluding the Bullsquids on Xen or the Vortigaunts in the factory). Animals aside from the crows (they're a really nice atmospheric touch) could be good, but I doubt I'd lose any sleep over their exclusion. Besides, the wild pigs in FarCry looked rubbish so they'd have to have a bit more detail to be good. THe parrots were very nice though.

First of all, I may be wrong here, but citing Half-Life is downright stupid. How many animals did you see last time you visited a top secret government facility? Maybe they have a cat named Trevor (he's ever so clever) for company in between missions to alien worlds, I don't know. There are not many animals hanging out in the desert either I'm afraid, during the day, with aliens and air force jets and black hawks around.

Having said that, some animals in Half-Life 2 would fit the scene, but not very many. Animals get scared by gun fire and explosions and aliens and whatnot, in city 17 any animals that were alive would be hiding.

I think it could be cool if there was animals but i dont care much about it.

If someone's adapted a wild animal (Keeping either an alien or another outback creature) as a pet... Then it's okay. But elseways it'd probably not fit, and I think VALVe knows this.

I hope someone's domesticated a Houndeye, those little fellas'd make great pets.

If they make animals i realy hope they make belevable(spelling?) AI for them to.
Like if you shot close to them they would run away. Or if you jumped/walked into one they would act realistic and not just stand there(like the pig in FarCry( I used to cut it with manchet and then pretend to eat it)).

AI for animals arent all that interessting, but if the AI is crap the animals may ruin the experiense a tadd.

*sigh* norweigans...

It whould be nice with cat's that start stroking your third... im mean one of your legs... :imu:

I think it would be cool to have some animals in HL2..

Be fun to watch dogs try to go and bite off the zombie's legs....

What if the resistance uses dogd to protect themself? What if a houndeye starts to fight a dog, that would be pretty neat...

What if they made super crack monkeys with pants on that ravegely hump things to death like those things in Zelda.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I heard rumours that Kleiner has one as a paet? That'd be so cute <Goes all gooey inside>

I'd be less confused if I knew what a houndeye is...

Are they the little things that looked were ankle high and were high pitched, but packed a punch with their rings of whatever?

The little three-legged green and blue fellas with one big black eye that made very high-pitched noises to hurt you. I think they may also have been called Sound-Dogs, but that name's crap.

Ah ok...when I first encountered them I was like, "AH HOLY CRAP WTF"

so i sprayed all over them with my ARMP5...:-\

[pedant]When you first met the Houndeyes in Half Life, you would have at most had a crowbar and a pistol. [/pedant]

:)

Yeah, true...I was getting ... funny I guess lol....

ok, I sprayed it with my 9mm..
