Animation blending

I was wondering that if I want to make ability to punch,throw a jab,
is it possible to just to animate upper body? And let the Source deal blending between upper and lower body. So you wouldnt have to think about foots.

This could save lot of time, and I think that most of the new games already use it.

Also, when Valve is going to release SDK and exporter to MAX, you can make animations in MAX and then export them to XSI,right?

yes, u can have multiple animation sequences running at the same time so if your button half is running then you can have your arms wave around when you press fire but not actually stop your legs from moving. I think they actually had that even in hl1......
