Anti-Virus Programs :(

I use to run Norton Anti-Virus 2002 and Norton Internet Security 2002 or 2003. Well the programs were great, it stopped many attacks against people and I dont recall any viruses.

Now have Sophos Anti-Virus and I get viruses all the time, for those who are familiar with this program and the other one listed above, give me some input on what is going on, (supposivly, this virus program i have now is a few thousand dollars) and the viruses just pop up and i have to scan and delete every time, its insane....dont understand what is going on. What does everyone use?

I use NOD32 now.. it's ranked #1 at virusbtn.com, Sophos has a pretty good track record:

I've been using NOD32 for about a week now, caught many viruses in some restore points that got backed up that nothing else would find. I used to use AVG, but thanks to simmo and his post about AV software, and virusbtn, I now know AVG is at the VERY bottom, and pretty much sucks

The only other program I have used is AVG Antivirus (a free program). It had many good features (being free was the best one) and it never let a virus past it, but virus removal was unnecessarily difficult and timeconsuming.

All in all, i'd recommend Norton (so ive just told you what you already knew :cheese.

As far as I know, most of the retail home versions of Norton have crap protection. AVG is also one of the worst anti-viruses available in terms of detection

Question, how do you know when an antivirus isn't letting viruses past, if it's your primary AV and you have no way to tell?

By the fact that my computer doesn't crash or show symtoms of a virus.

Granted, it's not the best method, but i'm of the 'if it aint broke, don't fix it' mindset, so im not bothered about viruses as long as my comp is working fine.

Norton seems to work pretty good for me, I don't see anything wrong with it. The only downside is that you have to pay for it (yeah, right. :angel: ). Have you had problems with Norton? Where are you basing things from?

I've had many problems with Norton in the past. As far as I can remember, the protection was (generally) solid, but I've heard alot of negative reports. My biggest gripe is the newest active protection that is horribly intrusive in how it scans compressed files. Worse off, there was no option to disable that system-halting scanning in System Works 2k3.

My main problems stem with the amount of resources Norton uses. I had System Works 2k3 installed, everything was spiffy, except it caused random FPS drops in games. So I switched to AVG, problem solved! Now I know AVG sucks, so I switched to NOD32, and I'm loving it
