Antialiasing 6x not working?

I've got a 6800GT, and I decided to play with AA/AF to see how it affects framerate. I actually get better framerates with 6x AA than with 4x (6x is recommended with the * in the settings).

But, I took some screens and 4x does a much better job. In fact it looks like 6x does no AA at all! I can post some samples, but just wanted to see if others have noticed this -- and if so, is it a game or driver issue?

I'm using the 61.77 drivers.

Thanks!

i have a 6800 gt as well, and i was quite puzzled at first because i noticed the same thing you did. the only thing i can figure is that the game isn't running in AA when it's set to 6x. if you go to your card settings to manually set the AA, you'll notice the 6800 gt has the settings 2x,4x, and 8x to choose from. I'm assuming the card doesn't do 6x and simply does nothing when you set it to 6x in cs:s.

when you're running 6xAA on your 6800GT in css, look at the vertical edges, i think they are antialiased, but horizontal edges aren't. As far as i know nvidias 6xAA sampling pattern only antialiased vertical edges, but aliasing is more apparent on horizontal edges in any game, which i presume is why the 6xAA mode is no longer exposed in the nvidia control panel - it's usefulness is severely limited.

yeh my card doesn;t seem to do 6x either, i normally stick to 4x`

i run AAx6 np on my x800p, here's some screenies

That's 1152x864 AAx6 Afx8

AFAIK nvidia don't do AAx6.
Correct. nVidia cards can do 2x, 4x and 8x - ATi allow for 2x, 4x and 6x, which is a lot more sensible, since 8xAA causes such a huge performance hit for little to no improvement of IQ over 6x.
