I have experiance with my computer, but consufused a bit!
At the moment i have Zonealarm "firewall"
and Norton internet security 2004 "antivirus software"
I now that both need to be regually updated to prevent virus, gaining control of my pc!
But as i will soon have a broadband connection,
i want to be confident about my pc.
So i have also installed the latest version of AVG7 "antivirus"
Will this cause problems having to active antivirus software packages.
any advice or past experiance would be apprieated!
SL1.

Would love to help, but I don't understand what you're asking.

I think I know what he meant. He's asking if having two anti-virus softwares could cause problems.

The answer: You'd better have one good anti-virus than 2. Your system might be slowed down by two anti-virus. I don't see any real advantages of using two anti-virus. Also, note that Norton Internet Security also has a firewall, wich means you have Norton Firewall and Zonealarm, just make sure you desactivate Norton Firewall or you may encounter problems.

Having more than 1 antivirus app installed can cause BIG problems. A mate did it on his pc with early editions of mcafee and norton and both detected the key system files of the other antivirus as viruses so one was trying to delete teh other while the 2nd one was doing teh same if you know what i mean, both trying to get rid of each other.

So my advice would be to run just one good one like norton, mcafee or nod32. There are others but I can't remember them.

Personally I use ZoneAlarm Firewall (disabled Windows Firewall) and AVG Free for Anti-Virus...

Never had any problems.

You will want:
1 AntiVirus app
1 software firewall
1 spyware app

I guess I should know this, but is it important, or a good idea anyway, to have a software firewall if your router already has a built-in Firewall + NAT?

THanks for all your replies, but yes i was asking if the two antivirus software packages would cause any problems on the same pc, when both active!
well then come to think about, it i have windows firewall, zonealarm and nortons firewall. and as yet i have had little problems with all three been active at the same time. "windows firewall is a little slow to detect things accessing the net or my pc, though "
and the two antivirus software packages has not had any problems with each other as of yet! "but it is still early days yet
I do believe though that this causes my computer to be a bit slow though when playing games!
THanks for your opinions and advice SL1.

why only one? you should use several imo.
Very true. There is no program/application that manages to get them all.

One point to remember:

A free antivirus that you keep up the subscriptions on is better than an expensive antivirus that you don't update.

nod32 is what, 15 quid a year if you buy a 3 year thing, and it auto updates like every hour...... what reason could you possibly have for not buying it?

Yes AntiSpyware. =p

There are a number of good antispyware apps out there for free. Spybot Search & Destroy is one. Microsoft's AntiSpyware (beta) is good as well as Ad-Aware.

Most Free AntiVirus apps are false security. Although I won't comment on AVG.
I use NOD32 (best detection and fastest, lowest resources used). PC-cillin, Norton, McAfee and BitDefender are very good as well. Although they may make your system grind to a halt when scanning (especially Norton).

All opinions really, AVG is the best and most reliable virus protection I've ever had.

People think that to have a good anti-virus product you have to pay for it. :dozey:
