I might be getting PCcillin(sp?) for my computer, is it any good? I currently use AVG and Norton on a couple computers, should I stick with them or go with the new stuff?

I don't bother with any of 'em

you don't get viruses if you only run programs that you trust

+1. As long as you are the only one using the computer and you know what you are doing simply having adaware installed should be enough protection for you. I update and run adaware on a weekly basis. Haven't had any real problems yet.

I have:
AVG 7.5
Windows Defender
Ad-Aware 2007

Because I always download silly things, thus getting a virus.

I've had Nod32 for the past six months, and as far as I can tell my computer has had zero spyware/virus infections. All my slowdown is the cause of registry bloating and the like, mostly from not formatting in about a year.

Even the free trial will be awesome. I had the 30-day trial for four months, and didn't run into any virus-related problems, even in the three months where the virus definitions were no longer updated.

AVG does me just fine for anything that happens to slip by!

I'll have to disagree with you on that one. We ran PC-cillin at our company and trojans got through. I use avast! antivirus at home and now at work. It's the best (and free)!

I have not used PC-cillin but it does quite well when sites review it (not best). Although like the one I linked to they all had 5 bars for effectiveness. Probably ment they past their tests and had certain certifications for test standards. Avast on the other hand did not (rated 12th) and I have seen in past reviews were it fails detection with the tests the site runs it through. Although every AV has leaks throughout the year that they don't catch a certain virus or worm with their updates.

I run vista. Basically Windows Defender. I don't run anything else. I don't need to run anything else.

For a while I wasn't running anything for my XP. Never needed it. Because,

Porn and pirated software is surely the most infected data, however, you can get viruses just from browsing the internet, no matter what it is, but usually that would be other forms of malicious software.

I have Avast! [free] and AVG [free] installed. I installed Avast as a secondary scanner for when I really don't trust something or am feeling extra paranoid. For my main anti-virus I've been using AVG free.

Avast! is really really really slow compared to AVG, although I haven't found any viruses recently so I can't tell if it's any better at detecting anything.

I know I have found several viruses with AVG - once in a photo, once in a .rar of photos, and once in a zipped exe. This was before I installed Avast virus scanner, for the record, so I can't say if Avast! would have found them as well.

My experience with Norton is really really really bad. Their trial software is basically an ad-bot and can't remove much. Their retail software has gone haywire before and I had to contact them for help. I had to re-install it.

They sent a threat to my mom something like, "OUTBREAK ALERT", "Viruses are present", and all kinds of scary bullshit worded to sound like she is under ****ing attack from all directions, in order to get her to keep putting money in it.

I think Norton makes the viruses, though that is just a huge lack of trust saying that.

NOD32 ftw
I love how this product is able to catch viruses by just analyze the situation without relying on updates all the time. And it's pretty low for resource demand.

NOD32 or Kaspersky ftw, tbh. Lots of people seem to like AVG, but I had terrible experiences with it (even the paid-for version). Every time I got an infection which was severe enough to be noticed by AVG's active monitoring, it was too severe for AVG to be able to clean it.

Just use an AV like Kaspersky and you'll feel the difference in quality.

+ I wouldn't touch Norton with a 10 foot pole.

Neither would I but my dad won't uninstall it. He can get Pc-cillin free from where he works though, so he's going to install that on our home computers.

As long as he uninstalls Norton. (Don't have 2 AVs installed at the same time).

And make sure to uninstall Norton before installing PC-cillin.

hehe
Well not just being blocked from online but the registry entries will not be installed correctly for the AV to work.

NOD32 is good. Sometimes I will be surfing and NOD32 will popup and give me the option to Terminate a Trojan that has been launched through IE (I don't solely use IE either.. I try to use both FF and IE a nice little mix, IE always pops up with trojans ;/ so a warning.) Also i will have to disagree with those saying you don't need AV software. AV is crucial what if someone manages to install a keylogger? trojan? on your machine... don't feel invicible. I have used BitDefender before the program is really good, but it can hog system resources which is bad since a majority of us are gamers... I find I can play counter strike source really decent even with nod 32 running in the background.

I've had NOD32 do that once before when I was wanting to download a file from a website.

Same. I connect to the net and my PC communicates with other computers (either servers or other PCs). Other people have access to my PC at my desk too.
If only you can use your PC and you don't connect to any other Computer then you are set without an AV. Or don't have any data that you consider private on there (bank info or even pics) and don't mind reinstalling when a virus borked your OS install etc.

Haven't heard of NOD32. It's an anti-virus program?

Is there a free version of NOD32?

Could anyone recommend a free AV program that's low on resources? I've currently got Avast.

Nod32

Check NOD32 from Eset.
I've tried them all and it's a gr8 gr8 gr8 piece of anti-virus software.

Easy interface, low computer-resource use, update fully automatic.

What have you got to lose ?
At minimum you'll get a free month.

Free I said.
Try the free 30-day NOD32 trial. I used it for six months (it stops updating virus signatures after 30 days but retains almost all functionality) and the only problem I ran into was a clogged registry.

The only thing about that is, for every day over 30 days that you run the trial, it takes an extra second to start up. So by the end I was waiting almost three minutes for NOD32 to start :P

haha ouch

Makes a lot more sense then some kid with nothing better to do. Kids don't spend hours in front of the computer writing code for some program that records how long you do a given thing on the PC. Maybe spend hours trying to find a way to flash some dirty pics on the school projectors or something of the sort.

The only people that have an interest in creating viruses are those who benefit from their effects, (I.E.) not a child. A multi-national Corp.

Since this month old thread just got resurrected I guess I'll post in here...

NOD32 subscription is up. Should I renew or get Kaspersky? BitDefender?
I'll probably get some trials for the time being.

I use NOD32 myself and some computer awareness and haven't had any problems. What I like most is that it has a very small footprint while still being pretty tough.

I uninstalled NOD32 so I can test other AVs. Trying Kaspersky trial atm. One thing I noticed is that it did not prompt me as I tried to download a 'crack' from a website that I know puts trojans in their files. NOD32 does (quarantine/delete) before I can even download the file. With Kaspersky, only after I manually scanned the folder I downloaded the zip file to did it detect it. I didn't want to see if it would detect it if I tried to open the zip or execute the file. lol

I don't use any AV or Firewall. Gateway machine takes care of all firewall related tasks (very strict iptables rules) and AVs are well useless if you know what your doing and use the following strategy.

Don't download dodgy shit!

After my little disagreement with Asus, I started searching online for product reviews. I've been happy with what avast! has given me in the past, but now I am looking for better protection. I have purchased a new notebook for school and work, exposing me to new threats. Here is the latest reviews I've found so far:

I've been trying out the BitDefender 2008 trial on my main machine and now that it expires soon, I still haven't decided if I will purchase it. It has a nice, simple interface and it updates hourly. The registry protection is also a plus, but can get a bit annoying whenever updating drivers and certain software. The one problem I seem to have is whenever the program updates itself, it makes my CPU hit 100% for a few mins.

I also just installed the BitDefender 10 Free Edition on one of my parent's laptops (we were using avast! before). It has the same scanning engine as the 2008 version and updates every hour. The only difference is that it does not have the registry protection of the anti-phishing protection (I don't use this). It also DOES NOT have real-time scanning. This is a problem for me because I rely solely on the live protection, instead of scanning my computer every now and then.

Take a look at the BitDefender Product Comparision Chart. I am going to try the Total Security version next and see if the extra features are worth it.

I'd be using BitDefender if it didn't make my PC 100% slower. Instead I'm trying out Kaspersky and it's great. Kaspersky together with Zone Alarm Pro = Security sechs.

Before I used to use NOD32, and didn't have any problems with it but needed a change just for the lulz.

Oh and that toptenreview site is really good - has some awesome recommendations.
