if anyone here is even TEMPTED to post a "omg, Hardcorez isnt even music, it takes no skillz to play" post. just get outta my thread. mkay? At any rate

favorite bands?

personally my fave 5 of the genre would be (in no particular order)

Winds of Plague
Stick To Your Guns
A Day To Remember
Sky Eats Airplane
MyChildren MyBride

oh, and Underoath is barred from mentioning.

Once I got a guitar, puchased eight different overdrive/fuzz pedals, and played a bar chord for half an hour and screamed into a headset mike. Then I cut the resultant file up into six smaller files, pitched a few up and a few down, and sold it.
'Nail Gun Enema - Blood and Vomit EP.'

That's what I bought?! I thought it sounded better than the average CD.

Most of the metal heads are most likely asleep. You are posting pretty early in the morning in the US and really early in the UK.

ah. i seee.

well then. we shall see.

but i wont lie. . . i did laugh at the quote.

Grindcore has a very deep, dark and quite disgustingly rank place in my heart that lets me stomach it every now and again, but christ it's hard to find anything really worthy of listening to. Theres so much grind out there these days just for the sake it being there that all the best, or rarely unique stuff, is hidden away. I do quite enjoy some Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Pig Destroyer, though.

J.R. is the goddamn man. Also seeing Napalm Death later this year for the 3rd time. Not a big fan of the music, but damn do they put on a show.

But metal... ****, I love metal. Again, though, alot of terrible generic rubbish out there so thesedays I find myself sticking to the Hydrahead/Ipecac record labels as I know for sure everyone signed to there is moving metal in the right direction. Isis, Zozobra, 5ive, Torche, Old Man Gloom, Cavity... man, too much good stuff in America right now.

I'm a bit of a metal fan, never heard of the bands you mentioned though.
I'm a bit more mainstream in my tastes.

Fear Factory
Falkenbach
Pantera
Megadeth
Metallica

I'm always in the market for new bands though, as long as they're not ear-piercing screeching metal bands like... Cradle of Filth or Slipknot. Eww.

Well mr. Antipop. i would suggest iwrestledabearonce as a possible band to check out. they're very love it or hate it but maybe you'd fall into the first catagory. they mix grindcore, jazz and electronic.

yes you read that right.

and yes, their vocalist is a girl. i couldnt believe it untill i saw some live footage.

and as for my friend Lucid. you might like Mychildren Mybride and War of Ages.

excellent excellent metal

Ah, see now this I can't stand, haha. Over here in the UK we call this ''deathcore'' - I'm not sure if it's hit the States as much as it has here, but it's possibly one of the most contrived areas of music I've ever had the misfortune of hearing. I'm not going to dig at iwrestledabearonce as I've only heard the one song, but trust me, I've heard enough to know it's one of the only genres I can actually say I loathe. We've got bands like Bring Me the Horizon, Suicide Silence, Abigail Williams, Ghost of a Thousand and about a million other VERY similar artists all making a big splash in the UK ''metal'' scene with their zainy clothing and wacky hairstyles. It's image over substance in these parts. Disgusting. But aside from that, horribly generic widdly-widdly blast-beat grunt and growling metal-inspired pish.

I mean no offense to you like, and I welcome band suggestions, it's just that particular type of music is something that really boils my blood. Well, no - of course, I wouldn't mind it so much in small doses but if you Youtube all of the artists above I can assure you, you won't hear any difference in sound.

lol. i'm sorry. out here in Tulsa hardcore and metal are very popular. i know what you're thinking. im in oklahoma, shouldnt we all be listening to country? ha well most kids out here dig the hardcore and metal.

anyways, that style out here is considered grindcore so i assumed you'd like that flavor of music.

i guess we have different genre definitions across the sea. my bad ha

Hardcore-wise invest in some Botch & Dillinger Escape Plan.

I didn't meant to come across as a bastard in my post, it's just over here it's a really big thing that everyone is praising as the biggest and best in metal. If it were in smaller doses, and it wasn't so cringeworthily samey and generic then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Had you shown me iwrestledabear once before I had spent the last two years subjected to about a hundred very similar bands it'd be a different story.

Also, I strongly recommend what Pulse said: listen to Botch. The DEP are pretty good (killer live act) but Botch... my god, what a band. Yet another fantastically unique band that have had the misfortune of having to split up.

oh no, you were totally fine, no offense taken.

and i will most certainly check them out when i get the chance!

Slayer, for more mainstream music I guess. I never saw them in concert, but I would go to concerts and not even know who was playing until we were driving home and talking about the show. Neurosis, Man is the Bastard, Econochrist, Buzzoven... I liked the music for the scene mostly I guess (as I couldn't tell you anything about these bands nor their music).

Slayer, however, rocks.

I recommend ''We Are The Romans'' by Botch. Great album. A metal classic, but very underated.

It seems you're quite into your fast, quite relentless stuff whereas I'm into the more slower, drawn out crushingly distorted riff-heavy metal. I could recommend stuff like that for days but it may not be to your tastes. I do love a bit of good fast hardcore like Botch, Beecher and Converge, or even post-hardcore stuff like The Fall of Troy and Fear Before The March of Flames, but these days it's the really ridiculously sludgy stuff that gets me going.

Buzzoven! Now there was a band. Neurosis are pretty awesome, too, but I much prefer the metal they've spawned than I do what they created themselves.

Although I HATE the vocals in this kind of music, the instrumentals are intense. Amon Amarth is pretty sweet in this respect. Plus they are all about the vikings. Bad-ass. I don't listen to much of the stuff, and the little I do listen to I just tune out the vocals. Although rarely they can be good.

D:

Sorry but, not the metal I like. :p
Thanks anyways, I'm just really picky when it comes to metal.

I've been listening to a lot of Within Temptation though.

When it comes to Metal, I'm very particular about what I like. Usually, I either love much of a bands stuff or none. Love or hate basically. But I'm a ****ing huge metal fan, I've been listening since I was about 12 years old (21 years now), and I love it more all the time - but I don't like Grindcore at all; I can't stand it. I don't like Brutal Metal either.

These are my favorite genres, in no particular order:

Thrash Metal
Black Metal
Speed Thrash Metal
Old School Death/Thrash Metal
Technical Death/Thrash Metal
Death Metal
Doom Metal
Sludge Metal
Melodic Death Metal
Metalcore

And any combination of these genres (there are other genres I love stuff from as well, but I won't make a huge list unless you want me to)

I'm not a fan of Progressive Metal or Speed Metal, unless these genres are mixed with another sub-genre.

My tastes rely heavily on Thrash, Death and/or Black Metal elements. Without at least one of those elements, I'm usually not going to like it.

Although I rarely listen to it, I also like much of the mainstream stuff like Tool, Disturbed, Godsmack, Metallica.

Gojira are stunning. Love the new album.

Me. Copied from my facebook:
Opeth, Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, Dream Theater, Metallica, Joe Satriani, Symphony X, Dragonland, Stratovarius, Boston, Megadeth, Dragonforce, Bodom, some Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Queensryche, John Petrucci, Pyramaze, Amon Amarth, Alestorm, Falconer, Ensiferum, some Bodom songs until the lyrics start, some Dimmu Borgir, Rammstein, Pagan's Mind.

I prefer:
Progressive, symphonic, some death, power, viking (melodic death).

I hate:
Metalcore.

HUGE metal fan here. Thrash will always be my favorite sub-genre of music, along with the sub-sub-genre of crossover thrash. Hardcore Punk can be very close to thrash as well and as such is another fav.

In my estimation, the best bands (though a few are no longer together) in these categories are:

Municipal Waste
Gama Bomb
Gammacide
Send More Paramedics
Cross Examination
SSS
Tourniquet
Conniption
Condemned Unit
Rostok Vampires
Blunt Force Trauma
Possuido Pelo Cao
Ratos De Porao
Wehrmacht
Demolition Hammer
Toxic Holocaust
Toxic Narcotic
Vendetta
Xentrix
Candy Striper Death Orgy
Evile
Assassin
Deliverance
Believer
The Crucified
Purified in Blood
DRI
Excel
Rich Kids on LSD
Final Conflict
Gang Green
Hellbastard
Holier Than Thou
Toe to Toe
Neuraxis
Impulse Manslaughter
Num Skull
Resist
Poison Idea
Lethal Aggression
MIA
Rotting Corpse
Sadus
Social Unrest
Tankard

Send More Paramedics

Tell me, did they ever make much of an impact over there in the States? They had quite the (undead) following over here until they sadly split up, but I never really saw any press from the US about them. I should hope they did as they were a stunning band. Killer live act.

Sadly no, they made virtually no effect over here. It was you who turned me on to them in the first place when you said that you saw them play with Municipal Waste so I thank you for that.

I hope my list serves to turn some others onto some great bands they might not have heard of otherwise.

Oh, thats a shame, then. :( Municipal Waste have made quite a name for themselves over here, though. Last time I saw them was at a gig with a barrier, which is a bit shocking. It was because they supported The Haunted, so good for them on that front for getting under thrash titans such as them, but it just wasn't the same.

(Actually it was still excellent, but whatever.)

Man, the band I just heard about is the Golers. The link in my sig goes to their myspace page. I am ordering up their 3 albums this weekend from the record label in Canada as they are impossible to find anywhere else. INSANE crossover slightly crusty thrash. +Rep for their disturbing name too. :P

Man, those guys are awesome. I need to get back into big disgustingly dirty crossover bands.

I completely share this man's taste, as Megadeth, Symphony X, and Kamelot are among my favorites. I would like to add:

Anything by Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One), Black Tide, Edguy, Hammerfall, and Demons and Wizard (a Blind Guardian/Iced Earth side project).

Holy Mother of Mercy! The new Napalm Death album, Time Waits for No Slave, is f_cking AMAZING. I normally am not a huge fan of theirs, but this looks to be one of the best releases of next year. ;)

Yeah, they played some of it at Damnation this year (I managed to get myself a promo release of the album a few months back, heh heh) and it sounds pretty sweet.

Upcoming metal releases this year I'm most looking forward to: the new ISIS; new Mastodon; hopefully a Jesu release that isn't another ****in' split or EP; *shels next full lenght.

New Devin Townsend album is in the works I hear, hopefully Hevy Devy can throw us a new SYL album too :o. Oh, I found a damn good band while browsing for some new music for my mp3 player, they are called the Monolith Deathcult, their new album Trivmvirate interestingly kick ass. They play some kind of Avant Garde / Atmospheric Death Metal. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=57980838 myspace page.

Good. Synchestra was a stunning album from Devin. Easily my album of 2006. Ziltoid... not so much.

And I really, really hope SYL get back together and write more. Such a shame to see them go. Ridiculously good live band.
