I hope this is in the right place, apologies if it isn't. Do you think any mod maker is going to try to make an updated CS mod using the Source engine, instead of waiting for Valve to release their CS2?

You don't even have to call it counter-strike, but any modern-weapons shooter would be great! I'm not a big fan of futuristic or historic shooters. And it'd be great to play a CS-like mod with updated graphics and gameplay (as in the physics).

There are going to be attempts, but none are honestly going to work and play as "great" as CS does.

Let's be honest, if Counter-Strike was not on the Half-Life engine, would it still be popular. It is my understanding, that Counter-Strike is so popular because of how smooth it is. Half-Life has one DAMN great Movement[total control overall] engine. Everything from the Firing, moving, jumping, ducking, and even switching weapons...all feels smooth and almost a little too perfect. If CS was on UT it just would not be that fun to play. I am sure everything could be duplicated, but it just would not "feel" right. It is kind of hard to explain, but I think this is what makes Half-Life overall a popular game to mod. Natural-Selection, DOD, TS, all FEEL...REALLY really well...

As for Counter-Strike 2, I honestly am not sure if it will be as great as Half-Lifes Counter-Strike. Perhaps if I was them, I would try to port the movement and control code[etc] over to the HL2 as a sub-standard, then work around that with higher resolution graphics and the lot.

Later--

Hey, go to any site that lists half-life 2 mods and you'll find a lot of modern-weapons shooters coming out.

I'm pretty sure Valve is doing an in-house CS2. Other than that, there will undoubtedly be tons and tons of CS-likes coming out for HL2.

Quite a lot of wasted modding resources I'd say.

There are lots of modern warfare mods out there... The difference I see with most are that they aim for even more realism (if you could ever call CS realistic, it was compared to HL).

Personally I would like to see CS recreated with the weapons as clubs instead, so you go around in teams and bash peoples heads in with a M16 :D
Melee is so underrated in MP games, Savage is the only one I know of that actually makes it fun...

Any modern?

Operation: CO-IN - Modern Infantry Combat with an emphasis on Realism and Teamplay.

NOT Special Forces or Counter-Terrorism like CS is. So, it's very different.

Valve has said that in HL2, the movement code is almost an exact copy of HL1's movement code. They've made a few tweaks to it but it's supposed to feel exactly the same as the original.

As for CS2 not being as good as the first, I think it will be just as good if not better. I mean... Physics! Need I say more? Ragdoll, grenade physics, breakable objects... Sometimes I just think of Militia with the physics engine. Ripping apart the wooden fences with an M4, shattering doors and boxes with your HE grenade, and knocking dead bodies off the roof or into the sewer! It gets me excited all over again for HL2 and its mods.

National Crisis is an attempt to guess at what a modern day world war would be like. I won't deny it's similar to CO-IN but I *think* (don't know about CO-IN much) it will contain a little more Arcady elements as they are going for uber realism. As I see it the scale is Below

ARCADEY - Chaos Ops - National Crisis - Co In - REALISTIC

Chaos Ops is gonna be very arcady with about 60 weapons and a 'buying' system - very CS like.

National Crisis Is going to have more realistic elements, less weapons, bullets penetrate walls and do damage based on speed, location and velocity, and the usual stamina and iron-sites etc. a kind of mix

CO:IN is going to be uber realistic I believe with a squad of infantry. Everything is being researched to the last 't'!

It depends what your going for. The above is just from me browsing through the mods and their forums and may not be definetly true!

I definitely here ya, Polykarbon, about the feel of the game. Everything is very polished and very well controlled. It's got that distinct CS-feel that makes it fun, however unrealistic it is.

And I'm glad someone mentioned that they've made this control the same as HL1 in HL2. That means I should expect more of the same for CS2 but this time with just amazing graphics, and of course the physics!!!!!

Hl is the best FPS because it feels so good. Cs is the most popular mp game for the same reason. If HL2 feels as good as HL, with all the other new features as well, it'll be better than its predecessor. If not, it'll be merely brilliant.

I don't think that any mod/game should be considered anything more than 'realistic' such as 'uber,' 'super,' or 'ultra.' Stuff like that.

Mods/Games are either Realistic, Semi-Realistic, or Arcade.

But, Operation: CO-IN is still going for a high degree of gameplay as well, except it is through realism (yes... realism can be fun). And as stated above, the emphasis is on realism and teamwork; gameplay shouldn't be mentioned because that is a given.
