I’m sure you’ve heard this before but I simply can’t figure this one out.

Three people go into a store and see an item for sale at £30, so they each chip in £10, totalling £30.

Later on the store manager deeds the item was over priced and gives a refund. He instructs his under manager to give the refund of £5.

His under manager is a bit dishonest and pockets £2 for himself and gives them back £3.
£1 to each of them.

So they have now paid £ 9 each.

So 3 x 9 = 27.
He as pocketed 2.
Sum total 29

What happened to the extra £1?

the brainworms took it

erm, they all paid 9 pounds.... 27 pounds. in total aye? they were given a discount of 3 pounds off 30. thats 27 pounds. =\ take away 2 pounds he stole and thats 25 the original reduced price. your looking at it in the wrong perspective :) they way its worded makes it seem that the brainworms stole a pound using inter-dimensional space rifts of doom

it's called MATH!

WAAAAAARGH

Besides, if the price of the item was dropped to £25 then each would be paying £8.33 and then be refunded by the dirty manager £1 each, therefore making

£9.33 x 3 + £2 = £29.99

therefore £29.99 = screw you.

this is correct, again the brainworms... er i mean its in the wrong perspective

unfortunately here your language is flawed. maths, the english abbreviation of mathematics should not be reffered to as math. simply because mathematicS is the study of many different topics and subjects not just one, and in turn is reffered to as being plural. we dont study mathematic, we study mathematicS. hence: maths.
americans....

mathematics: a science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement

mathematic: no english definition found

Oooh I think I get it...

So 3 x 9 = 27.
He as pocketed 2.
Sum total 29

They were adding the stolen 2 pounds to 27, but you're supposed to subtract it?...25...5...30..heh...cool.

*kills math*

I hate math. and it hates me. we are not a happy family.

But they didn't they paid £10 each and got £1 back, so they paid £ 9 each.

I wish Americans would use English properly, the way they use it, i agree is annoying.

I lol'd at that link...im so sad *shakes head in shame*

Lol I'm looking for the complete version of that guy's exam; I lost the link a long time ago :(

I've never understood the shortening of mathematics to math. Anyone have any background to it?

It is shorter, it is just like using an acronym or perhaps words like "Don't" "Hasn't"

MSN's Encarta and Cambridge agree: math is an abbreviation; maths is a contraction. Interestingly, math came about earlier than its partner.

Ok, there is nothing wrong with this problem... Because there is no "total" involved. Get it? the one dollar is still in the managers pocket. So, the guys essentially paid $9 each, the jackass pocketed $2, and the manager has the remaining $1.

Unfortunately our English is just as good as yours, just because we speak differently doesn't mean ours is more wrong. You guys use just as much slang and improper English as we do, yours is just different. Go read one of commradebadger's posts if you think you don't use slang.

the difference is even your proper english is wrong and stupid.

No actually our proper English is exactly the same as yours, as proper English is proper English. We have slang words and bad habits just like you do, but guess what, you're no closer to perfect than we are, get off your high horse like you created the language.

GAH, just because it ends in an s doesn't mean it has to follow into its shorter term! The only reason the S would be needed to follow, is if it was plurl, thus its not. What makes Maths better than Math. Your maths is still forgetting "Matic" part. Isn't the whole reason of shorting up a word is so it will be shorter..who cares about the last letter?

Gah, I can't understand you people!
