Anybody here with tattoos?

I bet you'd forget all about your family if you didn't have that tattoo though.

While I feel this might be a poor example of the tattoo having demographic, thinking your tattoo looks ****ing cool and getting laid are perfectly respectable motivations for doing something.

:p But seriously though it's body art. It will have different meanings to different people and there are tons of reasons why someone whould get one.

Just because some people get tattoos for the wrong reason and other people don't get tattoos for the wrong reason, but that doesn't mean everybody has to.

Sure. That's pretty much what I was moaning about - perhaps I should have been less sweeping in putting it and less of a grinch. How about this: While some people have tasteful and well considered tattoos, many permanently mark themselves with any old crap because it's the current fashion.

And for what it's worth, I like your 2nd tat, Pi. I remember seeing it in another thread and like that in the middle it looks a bit like there's an angry robot waving his arms about.

I will consider geting a "tattoo" when the technology has advanced far enough to make changing the appearance of your skin as easy as changing the wallpaper on your desktop.

If I was Pi's son, I'd be all "wut da fuk dad. dats gay." Of course, if I were Pi's son he would have suffocated me by now and dumped my body in the ocean.

I do agree that its one of the coolest looking tattoos I've seen.

I think a tattoo can look good, but never on an actual person. Which, I know, is sort of the essence of a tattoo. You can have the most meaningful, well done tattoo ever, but to me it will never look better than not having it. For me, just plain skin is always better looking. Human skin is pretty awesome. That's not to say that I hate every tattoo, just that it's never an improvement.

As a phenomena they have been subsumed by mainstream culture to the extent that their edginess loses any meaning (they are so abundant, that they blur into anonymity in a way), plus by and large the vast majority are poorly crafted.

I gots tattoos. See, they're both designs / patterns that I liked. They don't have any sort of attached meaning other than I like the way they look and, so I'm told, other people do too. It's about the aesthetics.

That way these tattoos at least will never lose their 'meaning'. I'll never get bored of them or think "O FUKZ WHY I GET DIS TATOO?" because I spent ages beforehand thinking about it and choosing carefully before getting it done.

Unlike some people I know who have bugs bunny tattooed on their side and regret it like hellfire.

Or "Yeah I got stars tattooed on my foot when I turned 18, they're shit aren't they, lol???".

Well, to me that's a good reason to have them mean something to you. Pictures would be nice, too. :p

If I ever got a tattoo, it would have to be at some really well established place. I'd even go across the country for it, because the fact is that 80% of tattoos look like shit, just by craft quality alone. I'll be sitting there amongst some people talking about their tattoos, and one person will be like "I went to such n such, they do a REALLY good job", and I'll see their tattoo and it is this ugly ass mess.

I have no plans to get tattoos, although honestly I don't have anything against people with the stereotypical butterfly/bird/whatever, if it's really small and unnoticeable like ankle/wrist/hip. Not a fan of giant tattoos with crazy coloring. Esp. the ones on your back, or the ones that cover every square inch of your entire arm.

If you're worried about it, couldn't you try something less regrettable first? Like draw/stitch it onto your backpack. It's not the same, but carry that around for a few years (since you don't plan to get a tattoo for a while anyways), and maybe you can get a sense of whether or not you'd like to have that on you -- forever.

Also, before you get one anyplace visible, be aware that if you're in a job interview and your interviewer is an old fart, it could count against you. In a perfect world, it wouldn't, but most interviewers are jerks. After all, they do go around checking people's facebooks. I have no clue what they're looking for, but it's messed up.

It's sometimes part of the dress-code. Things like no facial jewelery or visible tattoos.

Man no offence, but every thread that has to do with any form of risk, danger, or permanence you state how you never want to try anything, ever, in the existence of the world unless it has some no-catch no-frills "reset" button on it.

You even want to assimilate your existence into a cold machine because it means you'll experience a seemingly infinite state of consciousness.

Take a risk for once in your life bro. D:
