I'm just thinking about it,when I hear certain words,my mind often associates a color or image with it
for me-
Insomnia-A dark blue/purple mixture
Illusion-mixture of very light blue and white

yeah and quite often too. basically happens with every word, I think it's the human nature

Isn't that something often exhibited in autistic savants? Though with numbers or something.

I personally don't experience anything like that.

Or maybe you do, you just don't acknowledge it

Whenever I think of anything known to me, I see a color image of it. Not really what you are talking about though. A few exceptions include newspapers and other non-color... things. :p

Argh, stupid alternate spellings... That's why I couldn't find it on Wiki.

Supposed psychic powers that enable people to see auras around others may simply be a quirk of the brain, according to a University College London (UCL) study of a rare form of synaesthesia where some people see colourful 'auras' around their loved ones.

damn, and I thought I had psychic powers...

I know I have no psychic powers, but is this something only a doctor can diagnose?
because I've never heard of it,but this has always to me my entire life(at least what I can remember of it)

I always associate words and phrases with the most arbitrary things. For instance, explosion = water. Yeah.

Uhh, you're all probably experiencing those thoughts with memories you tie to them, you just forgot where those memories come from. That's not synesthesia.

Synesthesia is a very recognizable and repeated condition. For instance, if one who has color synesthesia thinks of a number, their brain will literally transmit both chains of brain stimulation. One would actually "see" a color when thinking of a number, very vividly and very repeatedly.

Just because I think of Winston Churchill when I think of the number 10 doesn't mean I have synesthesia.

If you or a loved one believe to be victims of synethesia, please take an objective test.

Pesh's right. I have associations, but full on Syenaestthesitsia is very different.

well I definitely don't have that syeenstashiase thing you're talking about. I've never even heard it before.

I don't have synaethesia.

Pah.

I think of images or even hypothetical scenarios/stories rather than just colours. Seems a bit primitive if all you see is colours.

Guys, really, there are all sorts of associations that people make to things. It's through memory- like a smell can bring up memories of the past, which is associated with something else, and so forth, etc. Unless you're seriously tasting country fried rice when you think of the number 3 or something to that magnitude, you're probably just making associations.

Synethesia is a RARE condition where the brain is built or restructured differently than normally.

i imagine what it would be like having friends, when I'm alone, in the dark...crying.

Does that count?

I watch That '70s show when I imagine what it would be like having friends.

:O

:(

:cheese:

sometimes i think of a word and have a color in my mind. E.g Explosion , Red, yellow, black.

Jee, could it be because explosions cause fires, which are yellow and red? And that explosions usually emit debris, being black?

No wai.

I actually get that a lot. When I hear the word orange, I imagine a kind of reddish yellow mixture, like you see at sunset.

peshmerga, did you even read that wikipedia page? it's not even a test per se, it's an example of how synaesthetes percieve numbers.

i'll quote myself from another thread:
You've misinterpreted the test.. Synesthetes don't hallucinate. The color is percieved as inherently linked with the symbol and affects the perception of it. For me, the number 3 doesn't -actually- appear as red (hallucination), but mentally it does and the two sensory inputs influence eachother. It's automatic for me and I can't imagine different symbols and sounds NOT having these characteristics, it's as natural as their original characteristics.

It's real enough for me, I have trouble with math because symbols such as 4 and 8 share exactly the same color which makes it hard to keep track of them; complex mathematical problems are a cacophony of sensory characteristics. It's also similar with music, I once nearly vomited because of the copper taste a microtonal track induced.

The case of brain portions intersecting is common within really creative people, there's been examples of the logical and creative pathways in their brains intersecting so they automatically exchange between both, which adds to the creative crazyness.

Do you take pleasure in dismissing people?

I relate certain smells to games. Not words to surroundings.

Can't say I get this, I usually just associate things with events or people, memories really. The important stuff, anyway.

On a somewhat related topic, I really don't recall saying that quote in Naph's sig. I demand linkage!

/facepalm

Dude, I don't understand what's the big deal here. Nobody claimed to have that werid syaesnathasia condition, the question wasn't whether you have it or not. The thread starter just asked if people associate certains words with colors. And you allready listed reasons how it can happen:

"Guys, really, there are all sorts of associations that people make to things. It's through memory- like a smell can bring up memories of the past, which is associated with something else, and so forth, etc."

It's friggin human nature to think about a certain color when you hear a certain word. That doesn't mean you literally see the color, you jsut associate it. I don't understand why you turned this into a debate about synesthesia...

peace :D (this smiley is included in the post to spread love/prevent flaming)

the tastes or smells that i get with most stuff (especially sounds) don't have any real equalivent, most are pretty odd, metallic like or soft, i cant describe it. synesthesia isn't special imho. the weirdest thing for me is that alot of people don't have it and don't understand it, it's so automatic to me, it's always been there.

Like in the other thread which coincidentally brought this up, yeah. I hear musical tones and letters of the alphabet as colors. It's not really like a hallucination at all, just another detail. But I can identify any note, chord, or key of a song I hear without a reference because of it. SO I'M NOT CRAZY K.

I think you're all nuts. I don't get this.

Yes, I get what it is, thank you.

OP asked if people associated things with other things, someone said it was synethesia, I'm saying it's usually not the case. People are coming onto this thread saying they relate the color yellow to sunsets. Holy shit, no wai. YOU ARE SO UNIQUE.

Congratulations, CrazyHarij, you have synethesia. Here, take my sandwich, you are obviously more deserving of it than me.

yes,I'm talking about relating a color to a strange word
Insomnia has no color because you can't see it,but like I said,my mind associates that word with a dark blue/purple mix

if your mind must associate red with fire, well, facepalm to you,one color fire actually is is red and your mind is probably pulling that out of one of your memories(unless you never saw or heard of fire, which proves that you never played Half-Life)

here's an example. bowsniper - green black red. it tastes like a sharp point in a fluffy cloud, with a rubber like quality, cant describe it better than that.

ahh..sorry,if you took my statement directly,it was meant for the many that Pes described above, wasn't aimed at you, sorry

Give me the sandwich asshole! I want to be special and unique.

Not really the same, but I now can't listen to most anything by Nine Inch Nails without thinking of Skettis or Karazhan in WoW. Every day for god knows how many weeks I would get up, turn on that playlist, and go do daily quests.

I remember numbers as sounds. Makes it pretty easy to remember long numbers.
