For anyone doing a mod (and I know theres a lot of you) is anyone else at a point where you find it hard to concentrate, and think of fresh ideas, or get work done?

In my case I havent lost interest at all but i just find it hard to think about new content for my mod. Anyways if theres anyone else thats been there before I need some advice.

thx for the advice. One of the reasons I'm having trouble thinking of new stuff is because I'm filtering out many of the ideas that i dont think are up to the same quality as the ideas im basing the mod on. All of the concepts so far in the mod IMO are all very good. I also try to think in terms of gameplay and try to reject ideas that are cliche.

I guess what im trying to say is that I'm being very picky about any new stuff and only choose my best ideas. At the beginning it was easier because I was working on concepts that would define the project, now It's just the details now, although I still have some brainstorming to do on characters.

yes I have all my finalized ideas written down, but I see what your saying I should write down everything then try to develope some of the ideas that I consider valid.

Now that I think of it, I get a much clearer vision of something when I write it down, plus it's easier to manipulate into something really good.

again thx for the advice

I have considered this before and I agree with you 100%. What makes It even more a conciderable threat to my mod (the second phase) is that I am alone with it right now. I have not yet looked for anybody to join me because I dont really have any skill as a coder or as a modeller.

I know that sounds absolutely crazy that a person would try to start a mod of with out the neccesary skills, but I still have very high hopes. I am self motivated, and have tried to research some of the mod teams.
I know that lots of them will probably fail when they get to the second stage, but Im confident enough that my ideas are quite a bit better than most of the ideas Ive seen in any mods being developed.

Thats putting it simply though. I know that most mod teams don't blurt out there ideas freely, and I know I'm still in an unlikely situation.

Another thing that brings hope to me is that valve is trying to make mod making easier for an average person. I'm definately willing to learn anything and everything I need to make this mod work.

My plan right now is to get a very polished idea idea for my mod and compile all my visualization for the mod so when it becomes public (when I get a website) people will be able to see exactly whats in my head. Once I have that done and some game content I'm hoping people will be attracted enough to my ideas that they will help me out.

luckily I don't think losing interest will be a problem I've been working on this mod for a while now and I'm still just as much in love with it as I was when I started.... maybe even more so, now that I have some connection between most ideas, and it's starting to come together. I accually feel like Im developing something, and I'm confident others will see it the way I do.

That is very much appreciated. I'm not going to look for help until I have a more final listing of ideas. Once i get that done and rethink it a couple times I will try to get a website up. Of course I'll want to polish the website as well as the ideas to make it as attractive as possible.

once again your encouragement is very much appreciated.

famas_man is a perfect example of what people should do before trying to form a team. There are so many crappy teams basedo on crappy ideas at the moment that tallent is being wasted.

Personally, I'm going solo untill the first release is ready...but that's cuzz I want all of the glory ;)

well good luck to you on your mod, I hope it's a success. It's great to see so many mods being developed, especially considering halflife2 isnt even out yet.

and I'm glad some people think Im doing the right thing by planning ahead. I'm usually reluctant to tell people I'm working by myself because there first instinct is that I'm never going to get anywhere. It's great to have some encouragement. You don't get much motivation from others when you're working alone so any encouragement helps a lot. Of course you have to also be able to take critisism but I think I've thought the process though enough that I know where I'm going by now.

good luck to all mod teams out there.

Thanks dude.

I wish you the best of luck with your MOD & give you my moral support (as if that's worth much ;) ) I don't shoot people down unless they give me reason to, so I don't doubt your potential. Although I’d be interested in examples of your skillz if you have any (3D Graphics, Programming, etc…) If you don’t have any of those skills, but present a very well thought out mod, that may not be that bad either.

I'm always overflowing with ideas. I had 4-5 large ideas today that would work perfect in my MOD. Feel free to chat with me on AIM (PhantomCarDesign) or MSN ([email protected]) if you are running into a brick wall.

Maybe I didn't read carefully enough, or maybe it's in another topic, but "What is your mod/what is it about?"

Okay, some tips for your first port. I know your talked it over and everything but i hope this helps a little more :)

Im writing on a whole different mod then I done before. This whole theme is new to me. Its a singleplayer, 3:rd person, cel-shaded adventure mod. I started with a pretty new concept for a mod, i havent seen a mod like this before.

Anyways, when you got a good idea to start from, then the rest wont be as difficult like when you do a modern tactical shooter (everyone's doing it, but you still need new features). You get more room to fantasize in.

Like someone said in this thread before, try to get some time off the project. You will mosta likely come back with even better ideas afterwards. Try to find a co-designer if your doing a big project. Try to find a mod leader or the like that can help you out. I got together with the leader for Versus (not public yet, but i can assure, that mod is gonna be awesome!) and had long brainstorming season (like 3 hours each) We came up with a lot of new things.

You sound like a good modder. Its a good time to wait before you show the public renders or pictures from your mod. I dont know what the mod team are thinking when they give away "beta model 0.3" to the public. Everything you hand out to news sites got to be final (or close to it), never give out halfdone models.

Its the same thing when you upload pics to your homepage. I rememberd when every news site was posting about my mod. They took everything i got and posted on their frontpage. Sure was wonderful times :)

There was one more thing.... but I forgot about it... darn.

it's really refreshing to know some people think the same as me, infct this threads been very refreshing. Yesterday I got some good new ides for my mod thanks to some of the advice.

well i got to go now, I'll write more later.
Oh and I'll add you to my msn phantomdesign.

Hey famas, if you use IRC, jump in to #halflife2.dev on quakenet if you want to talk with some hl2 mod devs. We will also start a new modding/wditing site (sister site for halflife2.net) in a few weeks.

Cya!

It will ve like moddb.com (feature wise) but more like a wiki on HL2 modding. People can add articles/tutorials on the site. They can also add mods (with a mod page for news, gallery and everything else) and a portfolio.

We're aiming to be a serious and muture editing site, with the best info on how to mod the source engine.

The site is about 90% done right now.
