If Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Halo 2 and Chronicles of Riddick are supposed to be the best there is, there doesnt that mean that there's not going to be anything new for the shooter genre?

Far Cry was crap, everything i did in it, i did 3 years earlier in Operation Flashpoint and it was and still is WAY cooler in Flashpoint.

Half-Life 2 was awesome, but way too linear, and kinda short.

Halo 2 was more of the same.

Chronicles of Riddick was awesome just like Half-Life 2, but again just like HL2, it was short.

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the shooter genre pulling the same old tricks? I'm getting so bored of these games, its just the same thing over and over, point and shoot. And everytime something comes along and people start having orgasms over it (Like Call Of Duty, or Half-Life 2) it really just ends up being the same thing, done just a little better.

Screw FPS, i'm converting to RPG's.

Complaining that the shooter genre is just "point and shoot point and shoot" is like complaining that The Simpsons is about The Simpsons. If you don't want point and shoot, look elsewhere.

And besides, Chronicles of Riddick, Half-Life 2 and Far Cry just "point and shoot"? Come on mate, you and I both know that there's more to these games (especially Riddick). Maybe not on the surface of things, but still, there's more under the surface (except, of course, for Riddick, which was effectively an adventure game with an fps perspective). :)

The FPS genre isnt dying, it will just keep getting better and better. It will keep adding more gameplay and new features. Do what you want but pointing and shooting is incredibly fun and isnt going anywhere.

It could be a much better genre, but everyone does there games nearly the exact same way. I dont think its FPS themselves I think its the makers lacking any form of creativity. Riddick was probably one of the few recent games that wasn't just the same old run point and click game.

Yeah but it's not like they created something new : Riddick fails right where Deus Ex 2 and the Thief trilogy failed before. If you look at the action aspect of Riddick, it's way too bad compared to other FPS. They aso copied a bit from Splinter Cell, but it's no fun at all.

Come over the the RPG side.... We have Baulders gate, Fallout, Diablo and tons of other classic games- as well as great new ones like the huge, open ended morrowind, the traditional Neverwinter nights and the superb but simple Knights of the old republic. Oh, and don't forget the sprawling MMO market... You'll never be the same again after you've played WoW.

Really now, how can pointing and shooting a gun be better than cleaving your way through ugly, smelly orcs with a gleaming axe of smiting in your firm hands?

The elder scrolls series ( Morrowind ) neverwinter nights and KOTOR are the only new rpgs worth playing :hmph: I hate those stupid final fantasy games, they arent even rpgs!

Oh man, neverwinter nights....mmmmmmm. That game has had the most replay value for me eva! Eva, eva! As a matter of fact, I'm going play it now.

I'm two any sword or staff fighting games with a good combat system, I hated Jedi Knight's combat system. I'm also into stealth games like Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is pretty fun right now.

Much, I for one hate most fantasy settings. Because they bore the hell out of me. Orc's are never as cool as aliens with guns/whatever I just can't get the whole appeal.

However there have been RPG's that are stupidly engrossing.

One of them being Vampire The Mascarade: Bloodlines

Now THAT was a good game. (In fact its my game of 2004!)

Why does everyone keep saying Half Life 2 was short? That thing wouldn't ****in end, and I was playing it pretty much non stop since I got it. It depends on what you put into it, I'm more of a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of player, I wanted to try everything first time out, and it was incredibly satisfying all the way through. Honestly, it's ATLEAST as long as the first game, longer if you exclude Xen :P

Doom III was fun, challenging and long.
I would've said fun, hard and long, but I don't want people to laugh at me.
I started the game at hard.

I probably should have elaborated. Riddick and Half-Life 2 showed variety, but both were short and lack replayability (some say you can replay Riddick again a few times because of its missions, but really the side missions are so short there's no point to it). And neither had Multiplayer on release. I'm not saying neither are bad games, they're probably the two best FPS that have come out since the original NOLF, but they both have there faults. Riddick's stealth was pretty average, and Half-Life 2's vehicle sections ranged from awesome to almost pointless (the buggy ride was pretty dull). Both games however, have fantastic action sequences.

But in the end, when i look back at the games and think about it...i dont really have as many memorable moments as i do with games like Zelda: OoT or KOTOR.

P.S: They really screwed up Bloodlines, if they added more quests, fixed the bugs and made the items/inventory/armor system like KOTOR or WoW, it could've been SO much more. And the characters were crap. Some of the main characters only have two missions and thats it.

man if 3drealms would just finish duke-nukem forever.... then i would be truely happy. lol

PEACE

I can't see how anyone can say that HL2 was short, unless you barreled through it as fast as you could. Some of those sections were incredibly long. It probably seemed shorter than most fps games because you didn't die as much.

I said it seemed kinda short. Most FPS games are kinda short (16-20 hours for me is short, which is probably long to others)

Riddick was 10 hours long, and full of fun all the way through.

Far Cry was the only game that i felt, got the length just right. It wasn't too long or short. Shame it was shit though

It will never happen.
First person shooters are the best thing since the vagina

Too fast for you.

Anyway, back on topic...

I don't think the FPS genre is dieing. It is going along finely.

Every "pure" genre is dying. We need to start mixing genres to the most, an utterly realistic FPS/RPG/RTS has always been my greatest dream, yet it would take bowls of money to make.

And a bowl more in case it failed to appeal to the public :(

well, that's the biggest problem. No one wants to risk that much.

I find to enjoy any game, I have to expand my horizons. If I only play FPS's I will eventually be bored. That's why I play many types of games.

A lot of FPS/combo games are stupid-tastic.

Gets dull - as do gimmicks like vehicles etc.

Genres are starting to mix, we've got the technology to do that now.

Comapre HL2 to the first doom, only about 10 years difference, and look at the difference. Looking past the graphics, the fact you can't aim up and down in doom, and other such things, half life 2 is much more 'role-playing' than doom ever was. You interact with other characters, you impact on your environment, emotions come through within the game.

The FPS is changing, no doubt, but just because it still carries similarities with great games like Flashpoint, dosen't mean its getting crappy.

Give it another 10 years, maybe less, and we'll be playing games with as much excitment as HL2, as much depth as Baldur's gate 2, and perhaps as much interactivity as real life. FPS is the most popular genre, it's gonna be advancing fast.

I think PC Gamers as a group are starting to become more and more cynical and jaded. I encourage anyone who begins to feel like that to try and branch out into other genres. When you come back you'll likely have a new appreciation for the amazing games we've been getting.
Everything in moderation. :D

I think most PC gamers already play across genre. I personally know very few hardcore PC gamers who limit themselves to one specific genre.

So I don't think you can say "come over to the RPG side!" or "come over to the RTS side!" because chances are they already do play those type of games. I know I do, as well as enjoying a good FPS when one comes out.

Thats exactly my point. You need that kind of variety to keep things interesting and your view fresh. I'm talking to the people who can't do anything but nitpick the absolute hell out of a new game, no matter how good.
(I still marvel at HL2, having played through it probably 4-5 times now. I spent a good few minutes the other day just sitting on the airboat and watching the birds while the waves slapped the pontoons.)

I've thought the FPS genre had sucked since i completed FC a year ago. I'd much rather PC games be biased towards MMO's...they are 40x the games any other genre will ever be and are only in baby form at the moment i think.

Edit/ Not that i don't like any other PC games...i love at least 1 game in all genre's that PC's are worth doing.

Sometimes people don't want a lot of the things involved with MMO's though...its certainly a hell of a commitment with all the time you have to tie up in one.
