The game that could have, but did not.

What a cool game, awesome concept, fun to play (in most parts), but it flopped.
These are the reasons:
- They cut the multiplayer
- You can hardly mod it
- No option to quick save
- Konoko likes falling off edges.

If they had done those simple things, that game would be so popular. At least in my view.
What are your thoughts/comments about Oni?

EDIT:
For those of you who don't know what Oni is, you play Konoko, a seemingly genetically enhanced government agent that kicks butt. You can have weapons and you can also choose to beat people up (which you do more often, because ammo is scarce).
It's got several neat features with it that add some effect (hypo & overcharge, force fields and some acrobatic stuff)

Bungie made it (Halo, Trespasser) I like them (: they long ago where some kickass mac devs actually. Anyways Oni looked interesting but I never bought it :O

heh, neither did I 0_0 :D
there's a torrent for it at suprnova

I never played ONI. I used to love Bungie, (kinda still do) but that was back in the MAC marathon days like babyheadcrab said. I may try it out someday, but it just never looked too appealing to me.

i've been playing it off and on for years.
It never had that zing to get you really interested right away, but the gameplay is pretty good

I had it and loved it, Beat the last boss, went to start the game again from a new level with the cheat menu for fun, lost all my saves first so i had to do it over again, which i never because it annoyed me.

Great game but flawed movement.

I saw you wrote 'Hardly mod it', does that mean there are mods out there? If so what do they do?

Oni was a sweet game - and a breath of fresh air for the pc.

A sequal with online co-op would be so damn good :D

yah, i've alwasy wanted something like that... But I really doubt it will ever happen.

I don't think Bungie developed Tresspasser.

I stand corrected, dreamworks interactive created Trespasser. Marathon is the game I meant to list (exellent game).

back when i went to purchase HL1 (first week of release i think) i saw this game there and every time after that i went into the store i thought of getting it.. but something else always held my interest more...

sounds interesting from what u have described...hmm.. is there a sequel planned?

I played the Oni demo a while back. I can barely remember it.

I don't think so... If there was, I'd get it for sure...
But I think in Bungie's vision, since the first didn't do so well, why make a second...
but the problem is, is that the first one could have been great, they just didn't put that extra little "omph" into it.
If they made a second I assure you it would be a best-seller.

They're probably too focused on Halo 2 to think about anything else though

i understand what ur saying.. and yeah.. from what ur saying.. it really does sound like it was missing that little "omph" which games need to make them sell..

I played it, but it ran like shite on my old ATI card.

No quicksaving is good :) , and one of Far Cry's saving graces.

Grow some balls guys, it's for girlies (imagine Golden Eye with quicksaving :/ would have ruined the game)

Fun demo, I never bought it though, it lacked the things you said above.

Warbie, I don't think the N64 could handle quicksaving, though that would be so cool. Then again it would make the game horribly easy.

Regardless of whether the N64 could handle it, quicksaving is a horrible feature in video games. It detracts from the the challenge, tension and immersion. A sign of lazy game design.

Maybe a limit to how many quicksaves per level would be a better comprimise seeing as how so many people are dependant on quicksaves.

Funny... when I TRIED to play it, I thought it was possibly the worst game I ever touched. And no I've never touched Daikatana thank you very much.

From what I remember, the level design sucked.

Agh.. I remove my comment towards Snowball. He means Oni, I feel stupid....

i played the game..i can only remember that the character was a girl..

I have it for PS2 (bargain bin yay). I agree that there's a lot of wasted potential.
And Why did so many of the boss battles involve jumping over moving lasers?
I only beat it about halfways before getting bored and using cheats, and I basically never cheat.

Yeah, one of the first ps2 games i had. This game was awesome :)

It was the only game that let me run at full speed at the enemy, while running get him in a headlock, jump and spin around snapping his neck in the process. Some great moves in it.

The game sucked, badly. The environments were bland with warehouse after another and it just got tedious and repetitive. The only thing I like about it was the combat system, which they could done a lot more with.

heh, running lariat is so over-powered :D I love it!

I only had the demo with a few levels. I reckon it was pretty good kept me interested until I finnaly beat the 3? levels in the demo.

itd be cool if they remade it with today's tech
twas pretty fun

oni has got some excellent sound tracks......

The abscence of quicksave feature made the game sucky.
