Anyone know of a good free game engine?

I've seen a few, but I don't know what is a really good one for true beginners. I'm starting to learn C++, and I have some basic knowledge.

Torque engine? I'm not sure if it's free but it's the first engine that came to my mind.

Torque comes free with a book that costs alot though I think

But are those two for 2D?

Torque is free last time I looked into it. Though if you want the full engine I think you need to pay. But you can still make a game using the free version.
