Some months ago there was some news about some new mapping program for Source games (mostly hl2) by some 3rd party guys. It looked awesome, nice interface and everything. But i cant remember what it was called again, does anyone remember? It was a huge hype for it, but i never saw the actual release.

Are you thinking of QuArK? (Quake Army Knife)

If you are, then I've tried it, but the excessive video card issues I experienced prevented me from giving it a good, fair run. It seemed like it had a lot of cool features, but it also seemed like it would take longer to get things done than with Hammer.

Again, if it worked properly, I could have developed much more accurate opinion of it (a perfectly working version could potentially have blown me away, but I don't know). Also, I might add that it took forever to setup and configure, but that could have just been me. ...but if Quark isn't even what you're talking about, then :dork:

QuArK is an awesome program, but its developers keep changing, and since Armin Rigo (original author) decided to focus on Real-Life(tm) things were slowly getting worse since version 6 (v5 was never finished).

There were guys who were trying to make QuArK read source models (to display them in the 3dview), but they left the project. I use QuArK sometimes to make basic geometry and do the texturing and placing props in Hammer. But I'm finding Hammer more and more friendly, but still some things are realised better in QRK.

Also, QuArK can edit a lot of games, nearly all FPP games that are mod-friendly, and has support for game engines like Torque, etc.

If QuArK is not what you were asking, Ravioli, then I haven't heard of any other 3rd party map editor for HL2...

no thats not what i searched for. Damnit, the program looked so good! It was very famous and well awaitad, but it slipped between my hands and i cant find it! God its irretating.

Thanks for your help though!

I heard of it also, but since that time the project seems to have disappeared without a trace.

For you slowpokes :)P), we're referring to a complete custom-made toolkit for Source games that operated independently from Steam and contained a level editor, a texture editor, and as I recall several other tools as well. Its production began at a time when we were all really, really pissed that we couldn't use the SDK without running Steam.

I am hella interested in this... A standalone tool would be awsome. If not then just to give some people a tool to map with when VALVe breaks the SDK again.

post any info you have, I want to have a look :D

I remember this. It was called something like HL2 World Editor. It's only homepage was a page in the Valve Wiki somewhere...

He stopped updating it because he "got bought". No information on who did the buying.

I doubt it - mainly because he was bought out before the big SDK update. Valve implemented some of the stuff he did (improved model browser, rendering models in 2D windows etc) but not the really cool stuff, like the Kismet-style visual entity I/O graph/flowcharts
