Saw a recommendation for this on another forum in response to a gamer's artifacting issues with D3. He had same card as me, 9800 Pro, and I, too, am experiencing these same overheating problems. Since this seems like a real good deal for a cooling solution (on sale for $14 at local shop) I'd just as soon go with this aside from any other fan/psu addition.

Is this a good product for my card, and will it squash most of my overheating issues with an application like Doom 3? My biggest concern is that it requires you to remove the current fan on the board (duh can't use it unless you do this), apply thermal paste around GPU core and then attach the Silencer to where the original fan once was. What's the likelihood that a novice with this sort of thing will damage the video card if they're fiddling around something like the GPU core?

I certainly don't want to risk damaging my card. The instructions seem fairly straightforward (culled from a review of the silencer) and done carefully enough I bet I could do it without many issues. Any input/suggestions wholly appreciated.

Let me put it this way:

VGA Silencers are THE top air cooling solutions for ATI 9### series. There is none better. 14 dollars is an amazing price. Buy it.

I think this should go in the hardware section...

on a side note

Spitcodfry, i havent seen you around in ages, maybe im just looking in the wrong fourms...

Athlon XP cooler > VGA Silencer.
Yeah, but you run the risk of tearing your card apart.

That and it's not really designed for use on a graphics card.

By the way, could I use the $14 VGA Silencer on an X800 or 6800? Because the new ones that say they are for them are like $50 right now. The 9800 pro ran pretty hot, close to what the 6800 and X800 run so I'm thinking the $14 one would be good enough.

The VGA silencer's probably the best aftermarket VGA cooler specifically made for video cards for two reasons: ease of installation, and price. Nice and cheap and it is very easy to install...you shouldnt have any problems at all and it shouldnt take more than 20 minutes if you're good with your hands. Also you could always reinstall your stock HS/fan after if you wanted to.

That said, it still doesnt compare to a good AMD cooler mod. And if you do it right it wont "tear your card apart". I used the VGA Silencer for my 9800 Pro but soon ditched it for a Volcano 10 AMD cooler instead since i wanted higher core clocks and i wasnt satisfied with the VGA Silencer's performance.

check out my project here.

I've heard of people using Revision 3 on their X800's. Apparently it works fine if you adjust a couple of things on the Revision 3 cooler. I personally have decided to wait for Revision 4. I guess I will wait a little longer until the price drops.

As for the 6800, I wouldn't bet on it. You will need the revision 5 for it to work on the newest Nvidia cards.

Right, I'm not entirely sure if it'll fit my 9800SE ;/

Would be nice to OC a bit more ;(

What are you complaining about? Your card is already soft modded to a 9800 pro!
