"Natural Selection Team Seeks $50K Investment"
http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/607/607025p1.html

Natural selection(NS) is one of the best mod of HL.
According to the steam network status, NS is the 6th popular mutiplayer games!!( 1st CS, 2nd CSS, 3rd CSZS, 4th DOD, 5th HL2DM)
Why valve won't hire the them to build NS:sourse or NS II? just like CS or DOD??

Valve may not be looking to hire mod teams just yet. They'll do it with an established mod team (when there is one).

Also if NSII is planning on being a retail game then I would imagine that the $50,000 investment would be put towards the engine they want to develop it on. If they are developing it on the Source engine then that money is for Valve, so they aren't likely to invest it.

Plus, I'm fairly sure that Charlie (the founder of Unknown Worlds, creator of NS) said a while ago he doesn't want to be bought by VALVe, but he would really start his own studio so that he retains the IP, and can make the decisions himself.

Well, valve could invest in them by giving them the engine, though, that would be QUITE an investment, probably around 7 figures investment lol

Don't expect VALVe to do them any special favors. NS is doing good now, but who says they won't screw up NSII?

Cool so this is how you begin with game developing studios =D

Why would VALVe invest in them? They turned down all help(supposedly by the article) and they probably would've been bought, I'm sorry but VALVe is easily making 7-8 figures a year. HELLO MCFLY, obvious answer would to go to VALVe, because they know what they are doing and will get to work on titles like TF2 and HL2:AM and maybe HL3. I'm sorry maybe I see this as a stupid move on their part, but from what I've seen from VALVe I would have a much better life working their, than trying to start my own company and build up the franchise. Its not like they will be starting off with millions of dollars like VALVe probably did. So in the end they will either be a great company(Unknown Worlds or whatever) or either fail. Best of luck to them though.

They've already screwed up NS1, but lets not get into that...

$50,000 isn't a lot of money, but these guys know what they're doing and I'm sure they'll pull it off. Hopefully they'll manage to retain the feel of NS. I wonder how graphically advanced they're wanting to go... fully dynamic lighting with all the bells and whistles?

They could probably use a free engine. Ryzom was made using NeL which is a free download.

At least they'll be able to do whatever they want. Valve would say "take NS1 and port it exactly as it is over to the HL2 engine, spruce up the levels visually and release it". The CS team are Valve's bitches now.

No, the CS team works like the DoD team, they all work on VALVe projects, they aren't sucluded(spelling?). I mean look Gooseman and Cliffe are the only original CS team in VALVe, and they work on other things, Cliffe has a DM map coming out tommrow if I'm not mistaken, and Gooseman helps with other projects.

*secluded.

Isn't Minh Le (CS team leader & coder) in Valve?

Why would VALVe invest in them?

Exactly, I was saying that IF valve invested in them. If you read my post, I said that UW didn't want to be bought by valve or anything.

Oh, and are they really making their own engine, or are they licensing?

Also, considering lighting is a huge factor in NS (contributes to both atmosphere and gameplay, hiding in shadows and such), it would be awesome if they could do fully dynamic lighting. I can't wait to see progress on the project :) Best of luck to them, let's hope they have it figured out. Charlie said he's done his homework, and knows the downfalls of most companies, so I have faith in them.

I believe Nem0 or Flayra mentioned something about being funded by Valve on their forums.

I not really sure though, so don't quote me on this. Feel free to go on a possible wild goose-hunt searching through each and every one of their posts to find it.

they dont have the manpower to create theyre own engine, and they arent financially going to be involved with valve in any way as far as I can see

as far as im concerned, the NS team has already messed up NS.
they had something good with 1.04 which needed some tweaking and some graphical updating but instead they totally changed the game and lost quite a number of NS gamers when 2.0 came out.

the NS team not wanting to be part of Valve is just another mistake IMHO but hey, if they think they can do better without Valve's help, all the power to them.

Gl to them. Was never a fan of ns but hey. They might come up with something cool.

Yeah, exactly.

I dont play NS anymore because the gameplay simple doesnt feel the same at all, alot of the most fun strategies dont even physically work anymore.. I dont even feel it's worth having on my HD :'( which is incredibly sad because at one point I was a rampant fanboy and it was all I played (was in a clan)
