Did you ever meet someone and happen to ask what some of their favorite movies are and they reply with the Rush Hour movies?

Here is another scenario. You tell someone you watched There Will Be Blood and Before the Devil Knows you're Dead and they reply "Oooo those sound scary." Which in some aspect they are right but still so very wrong.

I mean I like watching the stupid summer popcorn movies as much as the next lackey but I just don't understand how you could ignore good film. I am not even that much of a film snob. I dabble quite frequently in obscure films but a true snob would gander at my Netflix que, scrunch their nose, defecate promptly on my head and then sashay back to their loft and watch a David Lynch film, whom I am not really a fan. :upstare:

What I am really asking is if someone has relinquished their love for an utter shit movie to you and you instantly feel the need to hate that person, their family, and any future unborn children they may burden the rest of us with?

Not really, I have a lot of friends with shit tastes in movies, I just always ignore their taste in movies.

Friend: "Lets go watch Transformers, its looks epic."

Me: "Go **** yourself."

I had one friend who pointed to my Lost in Translation poster and goes, "why have you got a poster of a chick flick up there?"

I prefer a healthy balance of great cinema and cheap thrills.

Dont slate the Rush Hour films, they own you.

And no Im not too fussy about films, but I did look at Transformers and thought it looked cack.

Yes, yes, yes.

Yet I still watch some shit films and enjoy them. However, I deride people all the time for liking certain movies.

I'm definitely a film snob, but my favorite genre is pulp. So I love Transformers, even if I could write pages of criticism talking about why it's not actually a good movie.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a snob, but a film has to engage me on some level in terms of plot, character, dialog, cinematography, action. The more boxes it ticks the better, and if it delivers the unexpected vs formula that's the icing on the cake. As for Lynch he can be a bit hit & miss at times imo. Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive = Hit, Lost Highway, Inland Empire = Miss. Obscure and irrational as his films are though, they are visually memorable, and his ability to convey unease and terror through the screen is almost unprecedented.

I'm more of an anti-snob tbh.

This. If I'm entertained I don't see why I should care if the movie sucks. I do have a lot of odd tastes in movies, half of what I watch my friends have never heard of, but generally I'm easy to please. I think the only movie I ever gave below a 7/10 was Madagascar.

And don't you dare **** with Transformers.

It doesn't mean you're a snob. It just means you've seen better movies than they have. When they get past the age 18 then you can start to hate them. Young people are allowed to like shit movies.

Yeah, same here. Enjoy the damn movie instead of picking it apart. There's no such thing as having a "Bad taste" in movies. Its all opinions.

No.
If it's a comedy and it makes me laugh, it's good.
If it's a horror movie and manages to creep me out, it's good.
If it's a drama and makes me feel sorry for the main character, it's good.
If it's an action me and it gets my adrenaline going and keeps me on the edge of my seat, it's good.
And so on.

Yet plenty of people tend to piss me off with their elitism when it comes to movie opinions, like it's against the law to dislike a certain movie.(God forbid it if I happen to hate most of Stanley Kubrick's movies, except for Full Metal Jacket and The Shining!)

Yes, it is all opinions, but that does not change what is good and what is bad. You might enjoy a certain film, and that's fine, but it doesn't change the fact that it's bad taste if the movie in question is a barrel of badly executed horse manure.

well hate is too strong a word but if someone says the best movie ever made is say the Transformers or something along those lines I might not respect them intelligence wise however I try not to judge someone based on a single opinion because far too many people have shitty tastes in movies or what's far more common is that the majority of people havent been exposed to anything except blockbusters so you cant really blame them for not knowing casablanca is better than 99% of the shit that's been released in the last decade or so (at least in terms of studio run hollywood)

yes I'm a elitist, but I keep it to myself :)

I am a total movie snob when it comes to many movies, criticizing those I think appear to be very weak and uninspired, as well as those I've seen to have horrible reviews on amalgamated review sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

I still watch and enjoy many movies that are poorly rated however, but the majority I completely agree with what everybody else feels.

At this point, I don't really care very much.
I never take the time to tell people how much I liked the movie and/or how they are wrong.
Because, I'm there to just be entertained. Sure, it's nice when you have a movie with a very good plot and good acting, but sometimes, I want what some people call the crappy movies.
It really depends on my mood; I enjoyed Transformers because at that time I was just looking for a action flick, with lots of explosions and such, and I was satisfied. I didn't really care about the plot or the acting or anything.

I hate the film snob's holier-than-thou attitude about movies; the opinions about a movie are MINE and although those people may help me stay clear of bad ones, if I watched a movie, like it and he (or she) doesn't, whatever. The world continues to turn, we still kill each other and all of our nice little problems and we move on. But some have to make their holy crusade to purge those that do not have his(her) tastes. People just can't get the fact that other people think differently than them.

[/unintentional rant]

Being a bit of a snob film snob is almost impossible to avoid after your experience with movies has hit critical mass. You start to think about how between two movies you enjoy, even though they're very similar one will engage you far better than the other.

My usual example for my horror-loving friends is the difference between 28 Days Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake. Both were very enjoyable for us, but the one that has stuck on the shelf has been 28 Days Later. Dawn of the Dead was certainly scary and occasionally funny, but I saw a girl almost in tears when Jim's close call with death occurs at the end of 28 Days.

Once you start to try to think about the differences between the movies, like their themes, cinematography, acting, directing, etc. you'll start to figure out why you enjoyed the one so much more. It's when you take those criteria and use them to evaluate another movie, say DOOM or Resident Evil, that you find yourself being critical of them. It's not a bad thing, because you may still enjoy them, but once you've started thinking about such things they won't go away.

I'm easy to please with movies.

I don't watch a movie, and look at every detail of this and that.

"THIS PART, THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT THE KOREAN WAR, AND HOW WE DID THIS AND THIS!!!" When it's just some cowboy riding up and saying a line.

Really, I'm just there to enjoy the movie, not blow shit out of proportions.

A true film snob would say Rush Hour was the best movie ever made, defend their position with specific points from the film, convince you that they're right or at least make you respect their opinion, then tell you they were just joking -- Rush Hour is shit compared to Metropolis, Pi, To Kill a Mockingbird, or Un Chien Andalou.

I am not. In fact, its hard for me to find a movie I dont like, which automatically disqualifies me as a film snob, since to be one you must hate 90% of all movies ever made.

What Krynn said.

I usually enjoy watching most movies, and really don't care if its a masterpiece, or some cheap action flick. As long as it manages to entertain me then whatever.

I can be a bit anal retentive sometimes but i wouldn't go as far as calling myself a movie snob.
After all, we all got different "tastes". :D
As already mentioned, i too will still go watch movies that have been severely bashed.
Mainly to have some references and join in the fun. Like The Love Guru for example *shudders

I can be. I like the random action flick with no plot once in awhile, but I love to sit down and watch an engaging, thoughtful film more.

im a film snob in the sense that i think the best movies are usually not mainstream, more or less obscure and not necessarily of appeal to a wide audience but i enjoy mindless action and the like as well, so the snob part doesnt really apply

If it's good, I watch it.. Just because a movie won an Oscar or was nominated or whatever doesn't mean anything.. I hated Pan's Labyrinth, everyone seems to think it's so good... To be honest, my favorite movie right now is either Crank or Shoot 'em Up. Non-stop action, that's the shit!

I don't know why people always think a movie needs to follow certain guidelines to be good, if you like it, you like it, if it's good, it's good, period. No guidelines or person can tell you what you like. Shit.

I'm more of a music snob. Subconsciously I am probably a movie snob too.
