well i'm occasionally nostalgic, depending on what triggers the feeling.

last night i finished watching The return of the king (extended edition). the last time i've saw it was at the movies in 2003.
and i was like...2003, that's almost 7 years ago! it felt like yesterday. how can time fly so fast, and i'm not even that old in the grand scheme of things. so funny, because so many things happened during this time.
this is not a thread about the movie but i have to mention that i was at the top of my medieval enthusiasm at the time LOTR 1 came, coupled also with the elder scrolls: morrowind. yeah...it faded, alot.

despite of the overall gayness of the movies it did spark a thought in my mind.
you know the homo scenes where gandalf motivates/philosophizes about how every man must go trough these hard times, that this is the ultimate adventure. you know what i'm talking about right?
it got me thinking...what will our current generation talk about to their grand kids at old age?
my grandfather lived trough the whole WW2 fighting on many fronts and he's still alive to tell the story. what will we tell them...how we used to frag people in CS, or how we spent each day wasting time behind the computer screen.
what kind of meaningless lives are we living?

would you do something drastic that would mark your life forever?
one forumite that comes to mind is Dan...he cycled the US, what...2 times. at least he'll have something to tell unlike the majority of us.

personally i've been contemplating of joining the army next year, but i'm too big of a pussy to actually throw the ball.

You don't have to fight in a war in order to tell good stories.

very few people are shaped by dramatic world shaking events like ww2 ..at least the further you get from the era.

my life has tons of meaning. throwing your life away at the age of 22 at the end of a gun for some nebulous goal dictated by the powers that be is no more noble than living a full life, rasing a family, havign a meaningful career etc. your life should never be measured by how much of your blood or somone elses blood was spilled

would you do something drastic that would mark your life forever?

you may be disappointed if that's how you want to make an impact in life. I mean the military is more about accomplishing goals as a group not as individuals. the only way you'll make an impact is if you throw yourself on a grenade to save your squad mates

God damn gay LOTR movies homo GandALF!!!!!!!!!!! YOu can't geT in the ARMY CAUSE YER GAAAAAY HAHAHAHA

Speak for your self. I got lots of storys.

Our generation lived through Michael Jackson's death. :|

Never forget.

Just living your own life will impact... millions of others, some in small ways, some in big ways.

Your character alone, the decisions you make with your friends and family, or how you treat everyday people can have a huge cascading effect you may never see.
Those people will be somehow influenced slightly by your personality, your responses, and your choices. And those people affected will deliberately, or inadvertantly pass that on to hundreds of others.

Oh yeah. Having been in the army, now that's worthy of a story, that's a truly unique experi-waaait a minute!

So, do something! Write a book, join a band, get in a car accident, kill a homeless person! That'll be something to tell your kids about one day.

Go do it then! I mountain bike with 40yr old fathers...and they're faster than me! Just don't sit around feeling depressed.

I don't get nostalgic so much as live completely in the past.

Thread title is so misleading. I thought this was a general nolstalgia thread.

hmm...it's not that i have no story to tell. i have many, but none seem too dramatic.

i'm not saying you need to have an impact on someone, but do something unusual with your life.

sure...you can live, work, get married, have kids, grow old and die. like 90% of people do.
but that's no fun.
no need to go to war...just do something really hardcore.

i can't say my life was is dull, but seems to me i want something more. i just don't know what

just for kicks...how many of you did something mention worthy. ok get drunk and **** around with chicks is not mention worthy...nowadays it's normal, so skip it.
i'm probably talking something that tests your limits...

My life's purpose hasn't begun yet. But once my teaching career ends, I hope to leave behind a great legacy.

As far fragging people on CS... gotta do something to pass the time until I get there.

:sniper:

why not become a actor, your life will be more dramatic literally

or try to do some imposible record like how many grizzlyes bear you can kill inside a giant cage?

if you dont survive atleast people will tell your kids "your dad died fighting grissly bears inside a giant cage"

also considering you are from a developed country I wonder if you will like to to swap lives whit a kid soldier in a civil war torn country like the congo where you get beated by you warlords and will be cut alive to pieces whit machetes if you dissobey orders.....maybe I am tempting you too much, you also get to rape village girls, probably you will be raped too

Our Grandparents may have lived through World War 2, but we lived through the FPS wars of the early 21st century. Most old folks didn't fight on Normandy's beaches once. We were forced to twice every season.

I am hoping that in old age, my memory will simply go mushy and incorporate every game I ever played. I'll believe I'm a multi-veteran soldier-commander who walked around town and challenged people to falling block games and wild-animal fights. "We had to say "dickety" 'cause that Kaiser had stolen our word "twenty"".

HOLY SHIT, over the past 3 days I've been watching all LOTR movies, and last night I was up until 4 am watching Return of the King, no lie.

That's weird.

As for me, I play shows and stuff, so when I'm teaching my kids to play an instrument, I can tell them the stories of all the wild shows I went to, where I played, etc.

Why not do some volunteer work for kids with disabilities or something? It can be really fulfilling.

Unless of course, your only idea of fulfillment is shooting people or doing something hardcore...

No one wants to hear about how you helped the kid with no arm, they wanna hear about the guys head you blew off.

It's fact.

Well, what if you helped the kid with no arm by putting a shotgun in it's place?

Ever think of that?

Volunteering REALLY makes you feel good/provides a source for many stories

No....

*grumbles*

I'm sooowwy, ZT

*hugs zt*

*humps zt*

Making others feel good makes me feel good, so yes.

I would actually say some of my most interesting stories came from when I volunteered at a nursing home with my friend in our early HS years.

We met some really crazy awesome old people, one in particular named Louise.

"I know you, you're married to that wrestler woman"

Yes I am Louise, Yes I am.

ROFL! oh man, that was funny

weird...yesterday i've finished LOTR3 at 4 am :)

why is everybody talking about blowing peoples heads off. no i don't want that.

what i have in mind is:
-go long distance cycling like Dan (cycling in Mongolia perhaps)
-go on a trip to some semi developed country, somewhere in africa (like those guys a few years ago...which was also a thread on HL2net about it. remember?)
-try to survive somewhere in the Yukon territory (Into the wild reference...but that guy was an idiot...going there without a map or basic knowledge)
-go urban hunting in old soviet buildings and structures (watch english Russia blog)
-go to army...not for killing but for the experience
these are one of the more physical desires.

and i have many other ideas, but the main problem is...money. i have barely enough to get out of my house let alone travel to canada FFS. yes i'm looking for a job but it'll take a long time. second problem...i don't have enough ****ed up friends willing to get so extreme. but that is not such a big issue since you meet new people on the way.

i also have many hobbies so i won't be bored at old age exactly...but now while i'm young i feel i want something more.

making a family is still far away for me. making a career...mah, i'm not really a career guy, i like too much stuff to be focused on something very narrow.
seriously, i need to sort out my priorities a bit.

last week heading home from metalcamp i've met a dutch person who was 18. and in the middle of debating i asked him what does he do in his free time. he said partying, getting drunk and high. and also traveling...to places, and getting drunk and high.
this life is also not for me.

ehh...maybe i'm just in the early/mid 20 crisis, where your ideals clash with real life.

Our generation lived through Michael Jackson's death. :|

Never forget.
I asked my parents the other day whether or not they remembered, much less if the death of Elvis Presley had a significant impact on their lives coming up. They said they were too young at the time to care. Young as in teens/young adult.

I tend to be nostalgic too. It seems to get worse as I get older. Remembering the, "good ol' days" as well as all those old games I stayed up all night with school-age friends playing while sneaking his/her father's booze into our rooms.

*sigh* :(

I need to get off my ass and start paving the way for new memories as an adult so I can stop dwelling on pastime childhood pleasures and friends who all have but moved on with their lives too.

So apparently if you don't go to the army, your life is meaningless, or something? I know a dude in the army and all he does is tell BS stories about it.

"Grandpa, Grandpa, tell us your war stories again!"

"Well there was this one time I shot some weirrd lookin' kids"

Hold on.

I won, Danimal, you caved. I have the avatar now! hahahaha!

...

Somehow I feel strangely empty inside.. Like.... Like I needed a foe.

*cries*
