I hate taxes on just about all things... but there's something I recently learned. When I turn 21, I plan to do some fair amount of gambling in vegas, and shreveport, LA... however, it never occured to me that gambling is a taxable income. Not only that, its done in SUCH a stupid ass way that screws over the gambler. Not sure if anybody knew this, but this article explains it.

Now, i'm sure not many will care about this topic... but I love craps, roulette, and blackjack... and it really steams me.

Sucks... not only are you tipping the dealers, you're also tipping the government even if you're losing your shirt. Or technically, thats how its 'supposed' to work.

Yeah, especially slots. If you go over however much is set for taxable income, you would've made more money than if you would have WON $1 less from the casino.

Tax brackets themselves used to actually be like that badly for the middle class until some Reagan reforms. People would get raises at work and it'd give them less yearly income because they went up 1 tax bracket.
 
Think taxes suck? Try doing taxes when you own your own business and yah dont hire an accountant.
 
Dude, of course. Everybody knows the only reason certain states allow gambling is so they can tax the hell out of it.
 
Yeah, but see... the main thing that grates on me, is that you cant take your losings, and deduct them from your winnings. Or deduct them at all period. It really sucks.

But **** that, i'd lie about my winnings, and i've been reading all sorts of stuff about how to minimize your footprint so that if you win big or whatever, you're not catching alot of attention.

I always thought gamblers did a great job of screwing themselves without any government input. ;)

Gambling ain't really my thing. The most I do is play poker, and even then I play more for bragging rights than anything.

It also gives me an excuse to drink a bottle of whiskey and fill a room with cigar smoke, which is always badass.
 
Go without everything the government contriputes to for a month and see how much you like taxes then. Keep in mind that many, many companies get grants from the government.
 
I slightly enjoy taxes..i usually get at least $300 back..I AM only 20 though :(
 
This thread isnt really about normal taxes, guys. I understand the purpose of those... its about the incredibly unfair gambling taxes for people who play by the rules.
 
Ha, you silly Americans moaning about taxes! You should live in England. 17.5% on all items you buy, Council Tax, Breathing Tax, Sechs Tax.. England basically taxes you for everything
 
Theres even VAT on stuff Brits sell on eBay...

Yeah, but british ladies have that british accent. I prefer a plain old american accent on a woman than a british one :(

Except for some, who have a pretty sexy british accent... but its rare.

I don't like this at all. This takes out the "benefits" of gambling, much like investing almost except that investing's more secure.
This may push even more gambling underground. I'm sure the casinos don't like this.

defienition of state:
a politically organized body of people usually occupying a definite territory

Sounds like a country to me.

It just grates on me a little bit.. they aren't a luxury item.. tampons etc aren't VAT - why not condoms?

in florida there is a 7% tax on food :| , i mean come on, why the hell would you tax FOOD!
 
Not on food.. or childrens clothes, or books (iirc) but on designer clothes (boooo), condoms (ffs what the ****.. it's a health-related item you ****ing idiots) and alcohol (but it's more for sweet sweet booze iirc)
