Vocal cords were overrated anyway. A new Army grant aims to create email or voice mail and send it by thought alone. No need to type an e-mail, dial a phone or even speak a word.Known as synthetic telepathy, the technology is based on reading electrical activity in the brain using an electroencephalograph, or EEG. Similar technology is being marketed as a way to control video games by thought."I think that this will eventually become just another way of communicating," said Mike D'Zmura, from the University of California, Irvine and the lead scientist on the project."It will take a lot of research, and a lot of time, but there are also a lot of commercial applications, not just military applications," he said. The idea of communicating by thought alone is not a new one. In the 1960s, a researcher strapped an EEG to his head and, with some training, could stop and start his brain's alpha waves to compose Morse code messages. The Army grant to researchers at University of California, Irvine, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Maryland has two objectives. The first is to compose a message using, as D'Zmura puts it, "that little voice in your head."The second part is to send that message to a particular individual or object (like a radio), also just with the power of thought. Once the message reaches the recipient, it could be read as text or as a voice mail. While the money may come from the Army and its first use could be for covert operations, D'Zmura thinks that thought-based communication will find more use in the civilian realm."The eventual application I see is for students sitting in the back of the lecture hall not paying attention because they are texting," said D'Zmura.

"Instead, students could be back there, just thinking to each other."EEG-based gaming devices are large and fairly conspicuous, but D'Zmura thinks that eventually they could be incorporated into a baseball hat or a hood. Another use for such a system is for patients with Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS. As the disease progresses, patients have fully functional brains but slowly lose control over their muscles.

Okay, so, they're researching it. Not developing it. They can't even be sure it's going to work at these stages. Way to let everyone down, OP.

Sounds like technology the Adamist have in The Night Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. Brain Implants ftw :P

Call doctor Bishop.

LOL

But seriously, an email made with "that little voice in your head"? That's not such a good idea. What if you wanted to send a "brain" email to your boss and you unconsciously call him a dickhead in it...

Just you wait guys, with everything doing our work for us, one day we are all going to be like the combine, big, fat, telepathic slugs.

The idea of communicating with thought is stupid. I only need a 30 second thought conversation with someone for me to get arrested for hatespeech, sexual harrasment, racism, obscenity, threats. Even though all of these topics are just hilarious extreme jokes that plenty of standup comedians uses, people could miss-enterpret them, and it is impossible...i repeat...IMPOSSIBLE, for me to even EXCIST without having these thoughts in my head with anything i do. I just have to look at a pencil and i will have 2000 sexual jokes about it within 5 seconds, i just cant control it.

I can have a nice and intelligent discussion with anyone, but what goes on in my mind during that convo would be deadly if anyone heard it.

like learning to walk, I think it's something you learn to control. There are varying levels of use. It doesn't have to be to read your every thought, it can be used to control things like forward, back, stop, etc. Movement in a game? And in that case, you will have a reason to control your thoughts. You won't want to think ' jump off the cliff', for example, so there is an incentive there.

However, I see this as the next step in thought police tbh.

No, by that time we'll have robotic bodies as well. We'll all look like normal, muscular human beings, showcasing the infinate beauty of the human body via synthetic robotic material. AND we'll be telepathic.

Awesome.

Someone call F.E.A.R as well before insane psychic soldiers try to take over the world. :p

More proof that the most cutting-edge technology comes from military funding. Just as Tony Stark said in Iron Man.
GPS satellite, wave radio, internets, etc. is all thanks to military funding.

On a side note, this kind of stuff could possibly cause tumors couldn't it?

I seem to recall the idea of a device that bypasses the ear by delivering electrical signals directly to the brain to emulate sound for people with severe hearing problems. Combine the two ideas together and you get actual proper telepathy, not just this fancy email stuff.
