Article in "The Guardian" about valve hackers

Ah thnx for the link! Interesting article, the first one who gives us a more detailed view in the source theft and the arrests.

Heh just came across that myself, I find it interesting that news like this is starting to be reported in places like the gaurdian and bbc and even cnn as we've seen in the past. It's nice to see gaming related news moving away from the "EVIL GAME MAKES 5 YEAR OLD BREAK TOY" style of reporting which has been prevalent in the past.

It just seems to be a growing trend to give gaming a more grown up approach on a par with the film and music industries

Martin Korda... doesn't he work for PC Zone?

"We now had three independent ways of confirming this primary instigator and, through conversations with this individual, had convinced him to fly out to us in Seattle for a job interview. The plan was changed so German authorities would do the arrests on German soil,"

hmmm where they serious about the job offering or was that just so that they could get a hold of him? seriously rewarding people for breaking the law pisses me off(it's well known that certain hackers vira-writers get job offers for big companies.)

I knew it before this article.... but still very good to know justice as won XDDDD
Nuu well i do d/l games but i wont dream about hacking to valve... too bad it happend to them...

And what CNN know!? stupid channel... when some bombing accours in IL they never even show it! every channel does, but i guess tennis is more important then ppls life...

the hackers came from germany? i heard a rumor that some arrested guy who spreaded a virus in europe was involved into this hacking too, but im not sure if this is right...of course the TV just said he was arrested cuz of this virus thing, but i can imagine that he was mainly arrested cuz of hackin valve...

i'm happy that this article points out that the community helped! normaly gamers are just brutal persons running amok in the press -.-

I love it when large respectable news organisations publish things like this. :cheers: :)

I also love the guardian. :)

:cheers: i liked how the community helped out to track down the theives who took the very product that everyone is just itching to play..

i mean it truely shows how loyal we as fans are to a true great company.. i mean if you email anyone from UBI or EA about a game question chances are pretty high that they won't respond ..

but the people at valve help out and talk to fans and that is sweet

also shows how powerful the internet is becoming.. NO ONE IS SAFE.. SAVE THE CHILDREN. lol

After reading this article, I now realize that the delays with the game are almost trifold in regards to the stolen code:
Reassess the security of the network and pick up the pieces;
Investigate and track down the criminals;
Be involved with the law process of sueing the criminals.

I am sure Gabe's time was stretched very thin many times during all this AND still working on HL2. Some of us complain about the delays, we ALL want the game NOW, but this puts perspective on the delay, and I truly think I can wait until it is ready - up to Valve's standards (the highest there is).

OK, now, someone send 20 pizzas over to Valve headquarters! Chop-chop.

j/k

What was noticeably absent from the article was any mention of what happened regarding the job offer/interview.
It would have been satisfying to hear that the guy turned up or not.
It seems that even serious journalists feel that they only have to throw a couple of bits of tech jargon into their coverage to feel that their job is done, without the effort that would be expected of them in coverage of any other field.

Oh , thanks for the front page mention , only my third post . Go me ! :cheers:

Actually, SAJ, he followed that up with

"The plan was changed so German authorities would do the arrests on German soil."

I love watching everybody say how much they hate the hackers, when they did it for allof you guys that no doubt play the stolen version.

Yes...they died for our sins or something like that. Give me a break. What they did was illegal and delayed the game. So now they think the people who wanted to drool over some unfinished hacked illegal version a little bit early are really waiting another year for the game to come out. AWESOME JOB GUYS.

Even though it was illegal and even though downloading the "beta" was illegal, did it stop the people posting and reading on these forums from downloading it and playing it?
