My mate just recently gave me his nVidia 6800GT and 512mb or RAM, which bumps me up to about 700-something of RAM now *not a hardcore PC gamer, so this is all very new to me*

Annnyway, BF2 runs a charm in performance but theres errors everywhere. Geometrical lines criss crossing over terrain, from buildings, etc... Looks horrid. It get's worse when you max everything out, and it's somewhat plausable with everything in min., but it's very distracting and ruins the game abit.

Anyone know how to stop this?

Try a different Nvidia driver version? I'm assuming it doesn't happen on other games so it isn't a hardware issue.

I downloaded the latest drivers and they didn't help, but if theres something else driver related I should try please recommend as, like I've said, I'm new to this and quite frankly not very good at it.

And it does happen in other games; Black Hawk Down has the same problem, only it's not so bad, but still alot of stretched shapes across the map/models.

He never played BF2 when he used the card, he just told me it played HL2 on good settings so I was sold. Plus, for free you can't complain.

Like I said, it runs the game silky smooth in terms of gameplay, it just looks horrid.

This thread seems to be on the right track with having the same same problem with me, or at least his pictures of BF2 are exactly what mine look like, but all the tech talk in there is going way over my head. Someone just point me to a site to download something that will do this and that, etc. :P

i was referring to drivers not a game....whatever drivers he used should most likely work fine for you.

Oh, I dunno, I presume he used the latest whenever they were made available. Someone enlighten me, then: older drivers can be downloaded and they may work? Any suggestions?

Okay, cheers for that. Downloading now. Will post back when I see the result.

EDIT: Curse the gods! It downloaded and then said 'No archieve supported'.

Well, thanks for being informative there, nVidia drivers! What the hell does that mean?

I got the latest, the 94.24, and that didn't work, so do you have a link to this 84.21? The nVidia site is a little confusing to me. Too many numbers and technical words. :P

EDIT: Nevermind, got it. Cheers.

sounds like it's an incomplete/corrupt zip file or you aren't using the right unzip utility.

I use 7 zip and IZARC to unzip stuff. Both are free. Between the two, you should be able to unzip 99% of the zip types of files.

I would try to download it from somewhere else and try again.

It didn't even give me the option, just came up with the error. Then again, the computer I'm using doesn't have any Zip/Winrar type programes whatsoever I don't think. Feth knows.

Download and install these. most of the stuff you download from the internet is compressed into an archive that can be opened with one of these programs.

They integrate into the Windows shell, so you right click a zip archive and select "extract here" or one of the other options.

Look:

IZArc is the ultimate freeware archive utility supporting many archive formats like: 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO.
7-Zip is a ZIP compatible file archiver with highest compression ratio. The program is fully integrated to Windows Shell, so all archive operations like extracting, compressing and browsing can be executed using usual Windows Explorer. The program supports ZIP, RAR, CAB, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR formats and for ZIP format it provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by any other zip compatible compression tools

Virus: thanks, but I don't think it's going to make a difference. I just tried it with like 3 different drivers and none have made a change at all.

giant: it just... is. I dislike upgrading computers and all this hardware nonsense more than anything, so it just pisses me off, and it has more so now.

This sucks.

I didn't say anything about it yet, since none of the more experienced users mentioned it, but it sounds like something is wrong with the card tbh.

Either that or it's overclocked - which completely I doubt you are overclocking it unintentionally.

Maybe he cooked it by overclocking it.

Does it work correctly with any games?

What games?

I've only tryed Black Hawk Down and that does it, but not on the same scale as BF2, which is probably to do with the amount of detail in each game or something...

But yeah, he does overclock stuff, but he didn't mention he'd overclocked this. I'll talk to him tomorrow. I think it is something to do with the card.

On the subject, then, what's a good - and cheap - card to get to run BF2 in good performance? Should I just re-buy a 6800?

the amount of detail...

This is an AGP or PCI card?

do you have texture acceleration enabled?

This is just a stab in the dark, but maybe it will turn something up.

click the start button
click run...
type dxdiag
press enter
press next page
check if texture acceleration is enabled

is it?

examine dxdiag to see if you can get a clue if there are any problems

When you OC CPUs and memory it's in the bios so it stays. But GPU OCing is with software which is only enabled when booting into windows with the OC settings. So OCing is most likely not the issue. Although he could have done a volt mod on the card itself.

i was thinking there would be a problem with the card also, but i wanted to narrow it down before i said that. another reason why i said you should ask your friend about it.......hopefully you didn't pay him money when he gave it to you.
