This has been on for a few weeks now - what does everyone think thus far?

I'm enjoying it, even though Life on Mars was much better and it's suffice to say that the mechanics of each crime are being played out in the similar Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler way of good cop, bad cop, but either way it's enjoyable all the same. Who can say no to more of the Gene Genie kicking scum butt?

I really don't like the new character Drake much, though. Far too cocky for my liking, but then she does know of the crew by going through Tylers reports, so she's a little more prepared. Even so, she's quite annoying but still. Nice to see Chris and Ray getting a little more of the spot light as well - I do so love their characters.

Tyler is blatently still alive, though. I reckon anyway.

Thoughts?

I think it ****ing terrible, puts shame on Life on Mars. No John Simm = Fail.

Gene Hunt is still amazing and Alex Drake shares my first name and looks like my girlfriend. Sadly it's slightly more annoying what with all the "Hello mental constructs!" etc. and the music, by default, isn't quite as good.

It's still worth watching and, what with two further series comissioned, it will hopefully get better. Still a 4/5 show in comparison to LoM's 5/5, so it's great in my books. :E

this ^

also sam tyler is dead. It said in the first episode

It also said his body was never found.

Personally I thought he might of been on the other end of the phone to Gene in the first episode as the chief... err, chief inspector or police general or whatever it is the highest ranking officer in charge is called, but then the episode went on to reveal Gene saying his body was never found so that debunks that.

If there aint no body, then there aint no body dead, well as the saying goes.

Don't like Ashes as much as Life on Mars, the 80's aren't as cool as the 70's

That series ending was a mind****. Just found out they are actually doing series 3.

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky. We know Major Tom's a junky. Strung out in Heaven's high, hitting an all time low...

I loved this series so much, I like the way it has changed a bit from the previous series, keeping it fresh. Didn't expect that ending and a 3rd series set up :D

LoM S1 > A2A S1 > LoM S2 >>>>>>>>>>>> A2A S2 :x

No.

LoM S2 > LoM S1 > A2A S2 > A2A S1

Series 2 of A2A is better than one by default simply because they dialled back Bolly's terrible overacting for season 2 and thus was much more watchable.

What intrigues me now is how the past world seems to be a consistent world that anybody can jump into and not just a world created by the series protagonist. Even more mind boggling is the fact Summers could jump in and out seemingly at will as he states he could here the nurses talking about Alex, he was also watching TV in the first episode in hospital.

I hope series 3 explains some of this somewhat, because it is brilliantly confusing sometimes.

Series wasn't so bad, but the ending was a little unsatisfying. The kind of thing that gets written when the makers are about 70% sure they're going to make a follow-up and just want that little bit of ambiguity just in case they can't be bothered. Overall, the series just felt a bit filler-like. Good if you're enjoying what Ashes to Ashes started rolling, but unlikely to win any quitters back. They could probably have done more to explore the world, rather than just letting it trot on like a police procedural (which it's done since the very first Life on Mars, and actually to a slightly lesser degree this series, just not to any great extent). We are in the interesting position that Gene could actually know that Alex is telling the truth about 'the future', but I can't see the writers following through on that one.

Also, I have to say,
Summers murdering himself, Alex hiding the body, was handled VERY poorly.
The sequence of scenes had me convinced it was all a lame dream sequence. Then we get to episode 8 and suddenly 'I know what you did last monday Alex' etc. The effect wasn't helped by how easy said character found it to get into Alex's appartment. I mean, change the ****ing locks already.

The whole 80s camp (the speedboat in Episode 1) and 'I know you're all constructs' thing disappeared after the second episode anyway.

Yeah, but her overacting kept up for the series.
