k I dont know if I'm getting a good deal if I upgrade from a 9600XT to a 9800 pro. I can sell my 9600 for $200 and buy the 9800 pro for $300. Is it worth it? will I notice that much gains? I bought the 9600Xt because of the HL2 coupon (yes I know, I have "sucker" written on my forehead) but now I'm wondering if it's worth having a card that is made obsolete by pretty much every ati card after it. SO what do you all think? sell my 9600 Xt or keep it?

You can keep the card as it will perform pretty well in games even like HL2.
Are we talking selling it for 200$ USD?
If so, go ahead but I would buy a Sapphire 9800Pro off newegg.com if possible for 200$ (256Bit).

Otherwise I might suggest waiting until HL2 comes out and see how the 9600 works for you.

Is that US currency? If so you can pick up a retail 9800 Pro for $225. I also doubt you could sell your 9600XT for $200.

Check out newegg.com.

Are you happy with the performance of your 9600XT? If you are, there is no reason to upgrade at all. The 9800 Pro will only give you a 25% performance increase over the 9600XT.

it's in canadian $ and yes I have a buyer for the 9600 xt for $200...and the 9800 is $300 canadian..even with exchange it's cheaper than new egg

yes and no...it plays far cry at high detail ok but there are some places it lags a bit. I plan on getting some of the next generation games and dont want to be stuck with a card that'll under perform

I found a good deal on a new made by ati 9800 pro retail version for $300 but it wont last long (reg price is $350)

so what do you think? a 25 % performance gain seems pretty good

k guys I need reassurance that I did the right thing....this is your chance to call me an idiot, a newb, a fanboy or anything else if you think I made a bad decision

no takers huh? oh well If I'm not satisfied it'll be all your fault ...except Asus and blahblahblah...the rest of you will pay dearly ;)

I think it was probably worth it. I'd upgrade to a 9800 pro from my 9700 for $100 CAD (how much is that in USD?), but.. I'm waiting for the X800 SE, that should be right up my alley

hmmm I'm canadian I dont know USD ...oh and you wont pay dearly Shuzer cuz you helped. BTW how much you get the 9800 pro for?

100.00 CAD = 73.6158 USD

Interesting. I think that was a worthwhile upgrade, Stern :)
Anyhow, I don't have a 9800 Pro. I got a my 9700 back about a year and a half ago for around $200. It's served me well

You will spend $100 (Canadian) for a 25% performance increase. Thats a half-way decent deal. Nothing to write home about, but still is a nice performance increase for the money.

oh ok I didnt quite understand what you meant Shuzer..oh and you got a really good deal for the 9700 pro...it's not the pro version right? (still good card) did u buy it used? They still go for more than that...if you can still find one]

not to worry crushenator 500 I wont hold it aginst you that you had nothing to add...actually you made me aware of how often I respond to my own threads...thanks now you have me convinced I'm crazy! ;)

yes this is what I need to hear cuz if I ask someone who isnt a gamer they'll think I'm a loser for caring how good a game runs on my computer...and they might be right

Right, I got the non-pro 9700. The pros were around $300, IIRC.
The 9800s were just introduced when I got my 9700, and I was able to get it cheaper. They're much more costly now, since they're no longer in production

No I'm statrting to lose confidence that I'll be able to do that again....it took a lot of effort and now I'm exhausted ;)

you will notice a increase in speed in games that use shaders and such with the 9800 Pro. However, you won't see any difference and maybe even an increase of speed by keeping the 9600XT if you just play games like Q]|[, JO, and Call of Duty as the 9600XT is clocked higher at stock than the 9800 series.
