i was just at pricewatch.com and found this. i want to get an ati 9800 pro for half-life 2, and ive been waiting for the price to go down. this is the lowest price ive seen, but i dont trust it not being an ati card. does anyone have any info on this company and if the card would be as good as one of the ati $192.00 ones?

Powercolor are generally a very respectable company in terms of ATi cards, but there have been complaints that their version of the 9800 Pro have had memory problems.

thanks a lot for the replies. so are the msi ones any good, or should i stick with an ati one? its not that big of a deal because i know ill have to spend the money on one eventually, and im probably going to wait until the end of summer to pick one up. ill pass on this one because i dont want to take any chances.

Get the MSI one. It's actually a 9800xt, it uses the R360 core but they underclocked it. I think just by downloading the newest drivers from ati.com it will be recognized as a 9800xt or so I heard. It's much better than the normal ATi one, definitely get it.

so is a 9800xt better than a pro? and does it make a big difference being msi?

Get the MSI that the guy posted to. Its a 9800XT in disguise. However in order to take advntage of the r360 core, your gonn have to do a bit of work. First you have to make sure that your card can handle 9800XT speeds. After that just flash the card using a 9800XT Bios and thats it you got yourself a 9800XT for less moeny.

The 9800xt is a little better, nobody buys it because it's WAY overpriced, almost as much as an X800. But the MSI 9800 pro is a 9800xt in disguise, and it's a very good card. Oh and Tinneth your Sapphire 9800 pro is good too, Sapphire is ATi's main partner, can't go wrong with them.

I got a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb...

I have that very card sitting in a box next to me... now i just have to wait for the rest of the computer :cat:

so it would be easy to take the msi 9800 and kind of alter it to perform like an xt? if so i should look into getting one of those. so is every 9800 that msi makes capable of that?

Yup. They're all capable.

thanks for your help. ill look for an msi once we get closer to release.

Got a powercolour 9800 pro here (actually non-pro , but flashed and clocked to xt speeds) going strong no probs.

Good for you, you're one of the lucky ones who haven't had problems.

ive got powercolor 9800pro too, havent had any problems at all, excelent card! :D

the only sucky thing with it is the cooling, if youre gonna overclock it, youve gotta buy new cooling for it, but i guess youve gotta do that with any 9800pro card anyway :) (except those hercules super-ultra-duper with supercooling from "scratch" :))

Same here, i have a 9800pro powercolor and have had no problems with it.
