My bud and I jumped on the ATI bandwagon and we both got the ATI 9800 Pro 128 MB made buy ATI. Well shortly after say 3 weeks both of our fans started making funny noises durring bootup..... shortly after his fan stopped totaly.... then mine started making louder noises, my question has anyone else had this problem?

With the stock fan when I ran 3DMark 2003 if you litely touched the back side of the card right behind the GPU it would burn you it was so hot now with the fan mod I did its not hot at all, I wish I had a temp probe to see how much I really cooled it. Well anywho this is what I did, I took a fan off a CPU heatsink and placed it ontop of the GPU heatsink as shown in the link below.

lol

would you say it is now cooler than with the original ATi fan when it was working?

Yup yup... Card enroute to Warranty or totally new BIG and EFFECTIVE cooling system, or one that aims to total silence (no fan), or water cooling.
BTW you can't change card now with warranty because you have modded it.

Guys im fully aware I hosed the warranty the moment I removed the fan.

#1, I send the card back and they send me a new one and take my chances the same cheezy fan will last.

#2, I change the fan out for 4.00 then to pay 10.00 in shipping, which now the card runs much cooler with a ball bearing fan. ( 4700 RPM 25 CFM ).

#3. or ignore all smartass comments about ( dude you know what a warranty means NOOB ) sence the first PC I built was in 1995 75 P5 with windows 3.11... Im fully aware WTF a warrany means.

#4 I keep the fan mod to my self and say the hell with trying to help anyone with the same problem. ( not that putting a fan on a GPU is rocket science ).

Most people buy cards in store and won't pay shipping for warranty exchanges. For those that buy online, there are sites that pay your shipping when dealing with warranties you know...
If it was me and I had no warranty, I would get a good VGA cooler for the card rather than modding.
Looks like what you did works although that fan problem would only happend to defective fans or in a bad handling (which means you have no excuse for not taking it back and saying it a big problem).
This is the first I've heard of this problem...

sound like nothing but a coincidence that you and your freind had the same problem at the same time......

possibly a defective batch of fans.......

If you throw a twin turbo (brand name) fan on there you'll probably get some pretty good over clocking out of a design like that... i'm half tempted to do it to mine now.

I have an AIW 9800 pro though so it's a little more cluttered board

yeah crabcake66 im thinking its just that a bad batch of fans we got it from the same site and 1 week apart, he has sent his back and got a new card comming prolly tomorrow. The only reason I did mine with the mod I knew it had to work being the fan was 4700RPM and pushing a 25 CFM not to mention the card doesnt power the fan anymore the MOBO does which is now on my asus probe and I can tell the fan RPM's. I am going tomorrow to sears and get a laser thermal probe to see what its doing on temp, to give me some idea what the temp is.

temp was 130F durring 3DMark 2001 benchmark. then 105F idle.
