I know this isn't a specific HL2 related problem, but its definately going to stop me from playing anything unless I sort it. I'm not sure how much of the information below will help you help me; please bear in mind that I have relatively little experience fixing computers.
A while ago, before I had to format my HD for unrelated reasons (twice), I had to update my drivers to play Ep1. System Information told me that my graphics card was an ASUS Extreme AX300 Series and a secondary, so I spent a couple of hours on the internets looking for drivers. Eventually I downloaded them and installed. That didn't work, so after many more hours of trying different drivers, I eventually found one that worked, just, on low settings.
After formatting, I now need to update the drivers again to play Ep1 and Ep2, of course. Except this time, System Info tells me I have a RADEON X300/550 Series and a secondary. So I go to the ATi drivers page and find RADEON X550 series and RADEON X300 series listed there (there was no RADEON X300/550 series listed). Both direct me to the same page, this one. I choose display driver, because I already have the Catalyst control centre. I downloaded it and ran the setup exe, and naturally, my drivers were still apparently the same version they were before. So I went to add/remove programs, and removed as much driver related stuff as possible, then tried installing the new driver. This time, after restarting my machine, I end up with no drivers at all. It keeps coming up with the Found New Hardware wizard whenever I log on, which of course fails completely to find a driver from Windows Update. And to make it more complicated, System Info now says my graphics card's name is Video Controller (VGA compatible).
Dragging windows and scrolling currently lags the machine, presumably because the display tasks have been dumped onto the CPU in the absense of a driver to interface with the graphics card. Also, everything on the screen is bigger than it used to be, including the icons on the desktop [EDIT: Fixed this bit now].
I was hoping someone here could tell me what the hell is going on. I've never heard of computers changing their minds about which graphics card is installed, but maybe someone here has. The driver I had before was ati2dvag.dll, version 6.14.somethingsomethingsomething. Do I need to download the catalyst control centre again or something, or is there a completely different download I should be looking for?
Sorry for the long post, I don't know how much of that you needed to know. My specs:
OP: Windows XP Home Edition
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz (dual core)
Memory: 1Gb
HD: 232Gb
