Should I get a sapphire 850 xt or a nVGA 6800 ultra for max performance in Half Life 2?

You should get the X800 XT PE AGP for maximum performance in Half-Life 2 not the X850 XT.

if you need a PCIE card get the ATi, if you need an AGP get the ATi too.

ya i thought they cancelled the x850. am i wrong or what? go with the ATI though!!! for source, it cannot be beat

Ati would give you better results in Half-Life 2, but if you plan on playing Doom 3, the nVidia card would be the one to choose

either one would run hl2 perfectly so it dosent matter and the x850 u need a pci-e slot

ATI X800 is good for today's games. The 6800 is more future proof since I THINK ATI doesn't have shader 3.0 like the 6800 Ultra has. I have a 6800 Ultra and it runs both Doom and HL2 great. The only main dif is about....10FPS in HL2 between ATI and Nvidia.

How big of a deal are those extra things the Geforces have over the ATI cards? Will there really be any significant differences visually? I'm going to be buying a new comp soon so I just want to check around what people think...

Well ATi is releasing their PS 3.0 cards in May so if you can wait then I guess you can call those cards "future proof" also.

Gaah can't wait!! i'm on a 700Mghz piece of crap now, it sucks! :|

I can't believe an x850xt is'nt "future proof", it's like one of the best cards out there! Usually I can't tell a difference when it comes to comparing screens of different cards anyway, I think I'll be fine...
Atleast I hope so! :)

By saying Nvidia's cards are future proof that means either you believe in Nvidia, have seen the future or maybe even you are just seeing the number PS3.0 higher than PS2.0b so you assume.

X800 is just as future proof. By the time any of these cards start showing their age, PS3.0 will finally be featured in more games and there will be a PS4.0.

Heh, thanks. I get a bit jumpy when I'm about to embark on buying something this expensive (new rig)...

If you'd do me a favor, check in here... :)

Actually there are some big differences in games with PS 3.0 namely Far Cry and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. If you want to be future proof get the Nvidia if you want maximum speed in Half Life 2 get the Radeon. Since I play these 2 games I when with NVIDIA. I will get some screen for you if you want to compare PS 3 and HDR with ATI's PS 2b. Personally I wanted the extra visual quality so I went with NVIDIA this time. I used to use ATI when they were stronger so please don't consider my biased.

I would actually love some comparison screens!!
I'm not sure this difference matters to me, since I can get a
MSI RX850XT 256MB TV-OUT DVI PCIe for about 510 US dollars, or a MSI NX6800GT 256MB TV-OUT DVI PCIe for 585 US dollars, and I'm trying to cut the costs.

If you want to you could check out my thread here:

Anything excepts solid equal facts have some bias in(with no opinons).....even if it is real real real real real little biasy.

I really don't don't care for either.

There both rock solid card. If you wan't future proof go into the future and bring back a card.

There are some good gains going from PS2.0 to PS3.0 on Nvidia's 6800 cards. Not denying that. There are also very good gains going from 2.0 to 2.0B on ATI's X800 cards. Did you know that? Link

Games are just now really starting to use 2.0. 2.0B is a good jump ahead. PS3.0 is just more of what 2.0B is, supports longer shader instructions.

From what I hear the 6800 Ultra isn't all that great in directx 9.0 and using anti-aliasing. True? Oh and what will 10fps lost in HL2 mean overall (sorry I'm new to this stuff)? Are driver updates showing any performance increase?

Dr Devin, thanks for trying but none of the links except the anandtech one work for me (pics work), I get this login in thing...?

I wasn't aware that HDR was out of the x800 cards' range ?
Weird, but if that is so I might just change my mind.

It'd be really great if you could show me splinter cell comparison screens as well! :bounce:

must be typo unless there are some agp x850s i havent heard of
