i bought a radeon 9600 pro about 1 year ago and in mid game my graphics starting to freak out and go all crazy like overheating or something.

so i turned off my comp for 30 minutes and now it has dotted lines on my desktop and so I went to ati website and got the new drivers and now it wont even load my desktop. I can hear my desktop starting but my monitor is black. I took apart my comp and cleaned everything spotless and same problem.

The only way to get on my computer is to load it up with safe mode or VGA mode !?!

What did I do and how can I fix it ?

thanks, mike

maybe it's a virus?
did you run any antivirus scan lately?
if the system loads in safe mode, then that can be the case.

or maybe your monitor is broken, and that's why it's not showing relotions greater than vga. happened to me once, had something to do with monitors motherboard AFAIK.

sounds like hs/fan problems (maybe the fan is stuck or just dead)
oh wait it loads in safe mode.. try installing old drivers or something

if it was my monitor i would definenly know. IN-game graphics where weird not even close to monitor problem vga mode runs pretty nicely but i downloaded like 4 different types of drivers ffrom ATI and DNA and they all wont load my desktop. it shows my BIOS screen perfectly everytime and my windows logo with lines in it everytime and then just doesnt load after that.

no idea what happened ;(

old drivers for what ? I never swithed any drivers or nothing when it happened. about an hour before all this grapgica stuff starting going weird on me i thought i started smelling smoke, but i do that every now and then. or maybe i was really smelling it, but nothing at all was visable burnt on my comp i checked every nook and crany ;(

The lines that came up are artifacts which happens wen your card is over heated and is damaged. It seems to me that its got damaged furthermore and now doesnt work at all, so your computer can only run on the 16 bit colour whatever safe mod is. So to conclude your graphics card has been fryed and is broken and needs to be replaced is my diagnosis. And while you are there buying that new card, make sure you get some new suitable pieces to cool your computer to stop this happening again.

well my friend is bringing over a 5 day replacement and well see if thats what it is, thats what i thought in the first place :P CAn you link me to a video card cooler or something for a radeon 9800 pro ?
I was going to buy a new one anyhow :)

and can i get any money out of my broken card like recyling it to best buy or something ? :naughty:

You'll need a better/ more fans, but i really know very little in this area. There are many people here who will know about that. If the other card works you'll know for sure that card is useless. You cant sell it on you horrible person!

a 9800 pro is quite a hungry card, and if you bought it for a not very good/ new pc it would overheat the system. Might need a better power supply, or lower settings ALOT. Other people here will be more help, its gone midnight! Happy Bday to me!!!!!!! :E

I have a Radeon 9800 128meg (I dont remember if it's Pro or not) and I have not had any overheating problems. Of course, my computer has *counts* 8 fans in it. The case I have has a ton of them in the case,m the power supply has one, and video card, CPU, etc. My computer sounds like a tornado at night. A constant whoosh. Very nice.

I love my Radeon 9800. I recommend them, but it might be causing me trouble with 3D Edtting programs such as Maya and GMax (a free version of MAX). I don't know for sure. I'm looking in to it. Trouble or not, there will usually be a fix, so i still recommend a Radeon.

:naughty: so do I need to buy a VGA cooler or not i got the cash, but which one should I buy for a radeon 9800 pro? (preferable from newegg)
and I got a 300 W power supply, should I buy a new one or is it not needed? I go tthe money and i found a 470 W one for 56 bucks on newegg so i think ill buy that. :P

I also got 2 case fans anda CPu and Graphics card one too. is that enough ? plus i only got 1 more slot to fit one more, so should i buy a new case or im i getting overboard with cooling now ?

I got about 300 bucks to spend so you guys goo shopping for me and send me the product links.

(ps i need the products to dcome from newegg, and i think i want the saphire radeon 9800 pro for like 208 bucks but if you guys recommend a better one ill take it) :P

thanks, mike

I dont think you can go overboard with cooling. I bought a new case from the local computer store (DIT). It came with a power supply in it and all the case fans supplied. It has 4 fans just in the case and one on the power supply. I didn't do anything special for my graphics card. I just stuck it in. My Pentium 4 came with a heatsink and fan, so that was alright.

Sorry about the delay. School sucks. :(

lol i hated school too :P

well i went out and bought a new vid card and PRESTO my computer works :P

i bought a radeon 9800 pro and it requires 300 W power supply and i have a 300 W power supply :), should i upgrade the power supply and buy a VGA cooler too ? i am scared now that my new card is going to also overheat. I cant find a program that tells you your vid card temp, but i got a motherboard one and it says my temp is 50 degrees celcius. does that seem right ? when ever i feel my power supply it seems kinda HOT. So i might go buy a new one can anyone tell me what else i should buy off newegg ?

I got room for one more case fan and I think I really want a VGa fan and new power supply. can andy get those 3 products under 80 bucks ? or is none of this needed ?

PS radeon 9800 pro KICK ASS !!!

Sorry, but I have no idea what temperature and stuff should be at. All I know is I have Radeon 9800 and the power supply that came in my case. My case has 7 fans and sounds like a tornado. I haven't smoked it yet, and I've had it for a year and a half or so.

What's your CPU? 300 Watts PSU for a Radeon 9800 pro is border line... I suggest you buy another one. Some Vid cards have heat sensors, my friend has a GeforceFX 5800 and the temperature is displayed on the Nvidia Pannel. 50 degrees celcius for the case is alright, you should check the CPU temp also cuz it might be higher. If it's under 60 degrees celcius it's alright. For the vid card it's almost the same, if you are under 65 degrees celcius its ok. If you need a vga cooler i'd reccommend the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev. 3. It makes less noise at full speed than the stock cooler, easy to install, comes with memory coolers. Its big though so you must have one or two free slots next to the AGP slot.

aaah! thats the one that caused my 9550 to fry. damn pcworld salesman sayin itl fit.
hey, mine didnt come with memory coolers
im a bit scared to install it incase something goes wrong again
yeah u need one free slot right next to the agp slot, so the pci slot must be emtpy

I'm pretty sure the Version 2 has memory coolers but i'm not certain of version 3. You have to make sure it will work for you video card model though, sometimes there are minor differences and the cooler doesn't fit.

Edit: I used tie wraps to attach my IceBerQ for my Geforce4, it works like a charm :) With some arctic silver 5.

well i orderd new power supply from newegg. and really didnt make a difference on FPS or heat. But im feeling kinda bummed out because my CSS and even WoW run like crap i mean i get like 30 FPS in WoW and 10-50 in CSS. I used to run my 9600 pro and im actually getting same FPs on all my games, (all with same settings). I would really liked to of spent 100 bucks less and got my old card back. :(

So what are the temps? You could also check that you are running on AGP 8x (if you motherboard supports it). One of my friend had that problem, it was written AGP 0x or something like that and he set it to 8x and now it works like a charm.
