Ok, I know I just posted a thread recently on the ATI X800 Pro b/c that was the card I was most likely going to pick up, but now since I have been thinking about it (I'm going to college in the fall), I need something a bit more portable possibly. I didn't want to go in the laptop direction because I guess I would sacrifice too much power and risk not being able to run HL2 at peak performance with high settings, so I looked into some shuttles. I saw the ATI Radeon 9800XT is the 'best' graphics card they offer with their machines right now and was wondering if this was a wise choice for a card, I know it is a good card, but how big of a step down is it from the x800?

Is it worth even getting a shuttle, because it is around $300 more expensive. Please help me out (Asus :D )

Well, if you're gonna be mobile, shuttle's are great.

It's a fairly large step down...but it's still high enoguh pereformace that you won't really notice it in most games (ie all 'cept Halo, Far Cry, Newever games). Although if you build yourself a shuttle, you cna put an x800 into it.

I would put an x800 in, but they don't give me the option :D

Build one yourself, you can buy the Shuttle barebones which have the case, mobo, psu and fans. All you have to do is stick in a processor, videocard and ram. And since the X800Pro takes less power to run then a 9800XT, all should be good.

I thought that the X800 xt was the best card you could get from ATI!?!? Im I mistaken??

Not the best card ATI has, the best card Shuttle has..

If you are still going to order it from Shuttle then what is the price difference between the 9800XT and 9800Pro that they list?
They are almost the same performance and depending on how much the cost is it may be better to save some cash and go with the 9800Pro. I know it is when buying the part online individually.

Have you thought about buying a Shuttle barebones system and adding the other parts?

x800 is same size as a 9600, is it not? I read somewhere that they were small enough to fit in shuttles. the 6800's on the other hand...

Yes, the X800 is a nice size.
It also uses less power than the 9800XT. Cooler perhaps?

Yeah - it uses a refind heatsink/fan that the 9800xt had. At bit-tech they said this -

First major difference between the X800PRO and the 9800XT - there is no memory cooling plate on the memory on the back of this card. There is no need for one really; I probed around with a digital thermometer and even after 1 hour of Far Cry at 1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF the memory chips' surface temperature wasn't going above 55°C.
