At the Texas Gaming Festival's LAN party this weekend, ATI will be demonstrating what they are calling "the world's first 512MB gaming card," and they'll be giving one away to one of the attendees!

And nvidia strikes back ;)

Hexus.net is reporting that Gainward will today be launching a GeForce 6800Ultra with 512MB of memory! Gainward have an exclusive SKU just for their SLI "CoolFX" solutions. They have coupled the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU with 512MB of 1.6ns (1.2GHz) G-DDR3 memory on each of the boards. This coupled with the water cooled units, these cards of course will run on the PCI-E bus.

I don't understand, if Gainward have brought one out today, and ATI aren't doing it till the weekend, how can they claim to have the first?

well, techically we have yet to see either card and we won;t see anything retail for a while, so while it's all nice to hear about, we probably won't see anything before Q3, that's my guess at least

so its possible to have two 6800 Ultras each having 512 mb on them, making a total of 1 GB in SLI configuration on your computer....haha thats wicked

is there any point to a 512 gaming card? i thought 256 was barely being used?

Doom3 could use all that memory if you sstick it on Ultra. I'm sure I read that jc said that once.

You are right, D3 will use up to 512mb for gfx memory but really get nothing out of it. You should look at the SS between High and Ultra, no dif. ;)

The 512mb card is good for e-penis enlargement :D.

i think i'll stick with enlarging my actual penis, it's far less costly, though not nearly as attractive

Even ATI acknowledges there will probably be no performance benefits to bumping the memory support from 256MB to 512MB

Whats it going to be called?
the ATI X-850 Penis Edition

peps what is wrong with you ?
it is a whay of future.. back we were asking is 128mb to much !?
all new games will take advantage of it, (tex.)

all new games will take advantage of it, (tex.)

but by then, all the other parts of it will be obsolete (clock speed, bus, etc)

yeah.. but.. look:

mid 2005- 512mb card comes on sale.
late 2005- still no game that really uses that much ram
early 2006- supercard 2 developed
mid 2006- game comes out that works with the new tech in supercard 2, 512 card struggles cos its old tech.

Wow that Gainward 512 6800 got my attention.Imagine it SLI'd...

1gig of total DDR3 memory! :D

Probally won't see much gain in performance, but it is watercooled and overclocked....So that might counter the no performance gain argument.

yep it is fast 1.6ns (1.2GHz) G-DDR3 memory so performance is gain!

or maybe i just have big penis ;)

NICE! now all i need is money. Anyone want to give me 6000?

Er! Were'nt matrox one of the first to bring out a 512mb card, the Parhelia, (spelling?).
I'm sure other companies had 512mb cards too, Probably a Quadro or something.
Something for CAD maybe.

Just hope I win the Lottery!
