Team Radeon emailed ATI and asked about the Doom III benchmarks that were recently released at HardOCP. As we all know at this point, the x800 Pro and x800 XT PE were not showing good results. However, this may be resolved with the next drivers. Knowledge comes to those who wait.

Hi Richard - this is a non issue - Doom 3 isn't even available yet, and we all know that some of our competitors use partial precision where possible. We expect to have updated drivers available in the coming weeks.

The results were fine. They were just not as good as the nVidia results.

I wouldn't count on any major performence increases in DooM 3. The reason DooM 3 performs less efficiently on ATi hardware is because of ATi's OpenGL pathways themselves, and in order to improve them they'd be required to re-write lots and lots of code.

ATi themselves admit not paying anywhere near as much attention to updating OpenGL drivers as they should do, and said that they would give them a serious overhaul soon - and that keeping up or surpassing nvidias cards in terms of OpenGL performance is likely with the updated drivers.

I still think that ati could have performed better. But i guess the nvidia cards are better of opengl games.. but in hl2, ati will rule. :>

As some of my friends at school would say, I quote.

I wouldn't get your hopes up :)

Both ATi and nVidia can spin lots of stuff when needed. I actually wouldn't count on ATi's updated OpenGL drivers (ones that are "keeping up or surpassing nvidias cards in terms of OpenGL performance") until the next generation of graphics cards.

If updating API's was that easy nVidia would have done a major overhaul on DirectX 9 by now.

Well, Nvidia's issues with DX9 are hardware shader based.
Their way of getting around it is resolving to 16bit precision in places.

No but ATI wont rule in directX because nvidia and ati are even stevens in directX just about...look at all reviews, the ati wins some, the nvidia wins some. Then look at OGL, the nvidia wins all the time, even there mid range cards surpass the top line ATI card.

It wasn't the hardware shader issue that was the just the problem, it was the whole DX-9 issue, Even forcing PS1.1 on the GeForce FX line the cards performed slow. (slower than nVidia's own Titanium range in some cases)

While nVidia have certainly improved their shader issues with the 6800 series, their DirectX 9 API isn't yet up to the standards of ATi's.

We have two whole games that we use for benchmarks for DX 9 - Halo and Far Cry. I hardly call that a suite of games to test. DX 9 is still in its infancy.

Like I said above, we have 2 (real) DX9 games. Halo has a crappy engine. And Far Cry has a horrible time demo feature combined with the lack of optimization (or testing for that matter) on ATI hardware.

As for OpenGL, I'll admit the 6800 series will still beat the X800's but I want to see updated drivers for the X800's. The X800 still performs very well in Doom 3.

Yeah, I'd like to see the 4.8 or 4.9 Cat's on D3 once it's released.

DOOM3 will be better with nVidia cards no matter what, they are sponsoring it for crying out loud, why does everyone think "oh ATi is good its better than nVidia it will be better with new drivers wah wah wah" im sick of it already. nVidia will bring out drivers as soon as ATi does, and it will go on

I dont think waiting for the 4.8 drivers is going to solve much. Sure ati does have problems with their drivers (many problems from what some people have pointed out) But so does nvidia. Once ati releases a driver that improves performance so will nvidia. And like jooblar said it will just go on and on and on.
The drivers will continue to be optimized but not to everyone's likings and I dont think you can count on the 4.8 drivers really fixing that much. Sure it will provide a performance boost but so will Nvidia's.
So maybee in the end it doesnt come down to driver optimizations but who has the best hardware. But you cant do anything with hardware without software and you cant do anything with software without hardware.
Its just an endless chain and we may never see a clear winner.
I sure as hell hope valve gets of their fat ass and releases their benchmarks.
And ATI also better get off their fat ass and release their drivers.
These endless debates just keep going on and on and on.
ATI has been promising to fix their opengl drivers forevor now. What has changed since last months promise or the months befor? I dont know. Maybee the official doom 3 benchmarks. What I would like to know is why hasnt ATI rewrote them properly long ago when the first doom 3 bencmarks were released?

If dx9 is still in its infancy like blahblahblah pointed out can we really bencmark it properly?

And yes the x800's perform very well in doom 3 but I expect them to do better. The doom 3 benchmarks lost a lot of sales for ATI.

I wouldnt expect to see a greay performance boost with ATI untill they can get their hands on a boxed copy and see how its running.

I still don't trust those Doom 3 benchmarks. Either ATi or Nvidia could used Driver tweaks up the wazoo.

Frankly let's just patiently wait for the game it cost me $100.

/edit Funny really everyones getting riled up over doom 3, yet it may just turn out to be another Farcry.

/me hides from angry mob

Read around some of the threads in this forum. SM 3.0 is turning out to be a sham. One of the touted features of SM 3.0 in Far Cry, geometry instancing can be done on the X800 series. However, it is only activated through a beta SM2.0b path and the unreleased 4.8 drivers from Nvidia.

There are other things too, but you will have to look around. I'm not calling a winner yet for this generation of graphics. It is way to close right now.

Define "better"?

I have no doubt that when ATI gets there shit together with there OpenGL drivers they will improve things quite alot. Im not sure that getting 5-10 more fps when your already getting 40 at 1600x1200 with AA-Af and max graphics settings can be considered "better".

I cant stand resolutions that high anyway.

This is about nothing but bragging rights.

"better" as in the other one is shitter.

ill have to agree with you on the resolutions, i cant stand it when they are so high as 1600x1200

That doesnt answer my question.
