Attention all PHPNuke people!

I thought, as this is a place full of people who are pretty skilled with computers I would ask for some help with PHPNuke.

Now I'm doing a degree in Computer Science, but PHPnuke still has be baffled.

Basically I'm trying to create a new PHPnuke theme for a website and I thought a good way to learn would be to edit an already existing theme, but no matter what code i seem to alter after following guides, I can't seem to see any difference visually.

So I'm asking if anyone can help guide me through the basics to creating a fairly simply theme, i.e just changing colours and replacing a few images, nothing major. I also tried to set up mySQL database thingy locally so i wouldnt have to keep uploading what i had change, but ive been having problems with that too. So again, if you know, please divulge.
