audio problem, please help!

Hi, I've recently purchased HL2 off Steam. When I play HL2 I cant hear some characters when they talk. I have to turn captions on but...it gets annoying. but in the beginiing of the game i can hear...weird huh. also...the part where your on the speed boat...i cant hear the boat!

Maybe you have your system at like a 4 or 5 speaker setup and you only have 2 or something?
I dun know. It shouldn't be your sound card(considering HL2 uses it's own sound processing with the cpu).
