Four employees of the world's second-largest mining company were arrested in China on suspicion of espionage and stealing state secrets, after having been detained days earlier, state-run media said Thursday.

Four employees of Rio Tinto -- one Australian and three Chinese -- had been held since Sunday, said Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith.
China's reason for holding Australian Stern Hu "came as a surprise" to the Australian government, Smith said.

The incident comes after Rio Tinto broke away from a $19.2 billion investment deal with state-owned Chinalco last month.

DO BUSINESS WITH CHINA OR YOU WILL BE ARRESTED!!!!?!??!!?

Everyone knows these spy claims are bogus, it's in relallyation to the fact that the company droped out of the mining deal.

I was talking to my mum about this last night. It's downright despicable. What I want to know is, what are China expecting to get from charging them with espionage? The company certainly won't back down and they sure as hell shouldn't because that would just give China a go ahead to do it again to them and other companies.

I hope this majorly backfires for China.

It will backfire. But china is stupid they think "oh we will arrest him and say hes spying then the company won't back out of any further deals" idiots.

And the funniest thing is that heaps of companys will now back out of deals with china because of the stunt they have pulled.

I hope so. Unfortunately, China is now the economic power-house of the world so it could very well turn out differently.

You ever think that maybe they were spying?

they were accused of stealing "state secrets" how the hell could a company exec who is very very busy with work in his company steal state secrets when those secrets are very very well protected? lol

I love how everyone just thinks the "enemy" is plain stupid.

I'm guessing the 'state secrets' have something to do with the mining contract they were negotiating.

The negotiating stop months ago lol. They ended the contract, this is why china is doing all this shit.

Yeah, ITT: xdrive is jealous of North Korea threads

though why Numbers is jealous of Nk is beyond me. Doesn't he live in SK's capital?

This wouldn't have happened if the thread was titled
"North Korean mining exec held by Kim Jong-Il over pancreatic cancer claims of launching 7 missiles on July 4th and threatening to wipe out the U.S."

Now THATS a thread I'd check out.

he probably just happened to see one of the chinese higher ups with kittens on his boxers...

death by firing squad seems appropriate.

Just hurry up and blow them all away kthxbai
He's probably been caught bribing officials.

I find it virtually impossible to believe a rio tino executive like him would NOT bribe officials in the land of bribery. It's the only way to do business in China! But pity if you get caught, you may be executed.

No, as clearly said by china officials he has been caught stealing "state secrets" not "bribing officials"

S.Crean (the leader everybody forgot) has said something vaguely firm to China.

News at 11.

I hope China nukes us to teach us a lesson.

No really, that would be ****ing awesome.
