Australians to have president?

I was reading on my ISP news site that the Queen visited Australia recently (who still recognizes her as head of state) and some republicans started the debate that their should be a "homegrown" President. The reason the proposal was turned down last time, was because it was based on the condition that Parliament would elect the President. Do you think Australia should have it's own "head of state" instead of some distant royal who only visits occasionally?.

No-one really likes God Save the Queen all that much anyway - Land of Hope & Glory is the unofficial national anthem, that people actually like.

The music that goes along with Star Spangled Banner was a British drinking song from hundreds of years ago, then some American came along and changed the words to that poem he wrote. A great drinking song turned into the American national anthem, what sad times those were :frown: .

But the Australian's are most probably just having a shitty time with their politicians so the people to blame look for someone who they can blame the matter on. It would be no different then where you are now when you get down to the nitty gritty and the Queen is a far better head of state then some moron who another load of morons would vote into office. And anyway, you should feel honoured that our glorious queen comes to visit the little people over the other side of the world.

Good cultural icon? For who? You think it's good to see that we still bow down to a family who have no connection with us? I believe that it's a backward system reflected by a backward government, and it's no surprise that the current conservative government supports a monarchy. What's the Queen done for Australians?

Part of the reason why people didn't vote for a republic was out of fear of change. No one knew what would happen if Australia became a republic.

Also, how do you think Indeginous Australians feel about still having a monarch figure as head of state? It's a cold reminder of what the English took away when they invaded.

They used to say the sun never sets on the British Empire, and the historical story in which Australia has been colonised by whites right up to now is a shameful one, so I can't believe that any other country that Britain invaded and took over had a fairer go.
