Awesome CG scene from Halo Wars

That was a nice little clip even though I don't care for Halo.

**** Peter Jackson?
The lotr effects are still awesome 5 years later, just not cutting edge.

The CG in this trailer was nothing special anyway imo.

looked nice

but blizzard top that

Badass.

I'm hyped for this game and I don't even own a 360.

good CG, but nothing close to impressive compared to what blizzard and other companies has made. Facial expressions looked rather static.

Nice, but the inability of almost all 3D modellers to comprehend on the most basic level that human faces/bodies are not symmetrical is probably one of the biggest problems CGI movies face. All the particle effects and fancy lighting in the world are lost when you make all your models using simple split flipping.

im not nitpicky, I liked it even though I don't know what's going on.

Very neat. It's been a while since I read the Halo books, but I don't think the war with the Covenant had been going on for twenty years by the time of Halo, had it?

Actually it had been going on for about 27. By Halo 1 Humans just lost their largest military stronghold. And hundreds of other planets.

I'm impressed that those aliens have a better grasp of the English language than many native English speakers.

Its not that people dont realize that the face is asymmetrical, its that its not cost or time efficient to make it like that. Especially not for a small studio making video game cinematics. The time it takes to model an asymmetrical face is a lot more than it takes to mirror it, especially once you consider that everything needs to be quality controlled. Plus, once you have an asymmetrical model, you need an asymmetrical rig, asymmetrical animation, and more complex shaders to bring out those minor differences in detail. Its a conscious decision made based on visual style (having high res photo real faces in non photo real lower res environments makes it less cohesive as a whole), time constraints, and cost. Not incompetence.

Well they're speaking their tongue, it's translated.

The aliens and the humans sat down together and hashed out to each other the nuances of their languages to be used in aural translators?

Or are they using universal translators? Because the concept of the universal translator is complete bullshit!

Oh you... you silly modeler!

Actually doesn't make sense for their timeframe, in Halo 1 the Chief's suit translated it roughly and in his new mark 6 in Halo 2 and 3 it was improved. So closer to the start of the war the only reason they would have them speaking better woudl be just for the players' understanding. I'm guessing that if a marine got close to them speaking it would be all "GRAH GRAH GRAH."

A strategy game for Xbox 360...what?!

Only a couple of those scenes stood out to me as something special (in the way of CG). Will this be console only? I want to play.

That seems just a bit picky. Sci-fi shows since the begining of time have been doing that whole "different race, speak english" thing.

For Halo, that was quite good, wouldn't mind a short film or something done like that instead of that shitty live action bullshit they tried to do.

Yup.
The reason most 360 RTSs fail is because they are always ports, with PC controls modified to work with the 360 controller.
This is exclusively for the 360, with the controls created from the ground up to work with the controller, and they claim it works awesome.

And Dalamari, lolwut? The live-action shorts kicked arse, imo.
I mean, they built an actual fully functional Warthog for chrissake!

Anyway, my criticism on the vid:
No Marty's music (although the reason for that is obvious)
I hate Serina.
The Elite's mandibles are animated a bit wrong.
Aside from that, pretty damn sweet, although the previous CG short was more awesomer

Meh, that was dull even by Halo standards. Technically good, but the art and animation was pretty lifeless.

Couple of thoughts...

Why are there Warthogs flying in space? As far as I recall they always dropped from a larger ship only after they were in atmo, so I just assumed they weren't capable of space flight... guess not.

Why did the hologram lady (whatever they're called) have a horrible cliched synthetic voice thing going on when Cortana always sounded perfectly human?

Is a moustache, like, compulsory for commanders in the military or something?

I wasn't really that serious... lol

20 years in the past, maybe? I have no idea about anything in Halo so it's just a guess.

uh...Warthogs in space? Warthogs are the jeeps, dude, Pelicans are the dropships.
And yeah, they can fly in space if the hatch is closed (well, obviously), they just don't really do it very much since the engines aren't really that powerful, so usually they just hitch a ride on big ships until they are relatively close. But yeah, they can fly if they have to.

And yeah, I fricking hate Serina, not only she sounds hella dumb, I don't like her look, either. It's just so....generic. In the books all the AIs were all cool and original, but apparently Ensemble thinks that Cortana is the only general model possible. If she was like, green or something, even that would be a lot better.
