Say hello to the newest $399 PS3 bundle:

It seems like Sony is trying to empty out as much old PS3 stock as possible with this very enticing bundle. We could very well be seeing the PS3 slim and probable price cut soon, so good news for those that have been holding out.

too bad

ps3 has no gaemz

I would say that 367 is a good start. It's not Sony's fault that Best Buy refuses to keep anything in stock.

i still hate the fact that they took out the backwards compatible chip out. i love my 60GB and the ability to play older games

Considering the backwards compatability was taken out, I'm wondering what they're planning on taking out of the slim to keep its cost down. Or does 'making it small' improve the manufacturing process in some counter intuitive way?

That's a damn good price....kinda wish I woulda waited ab it.

OH WELL.

/me considers the offer

/me still unconvinced and decides to hold off still.

I'll show a slight hint of interest once they have re-implemented the backwards compatibility.

PS3 Slim is just a rumor. The PS2 was made into a slim version because nobody used the HDD expansion.

Meh, the UK defiantly won't get a price cut we never do. As long as Sony continue to rip us off and cheap skate by removing backwards compatibility i have no interest.

At this point I'd say it's more than just a rumor. There are a few sites that it borderline confirmed:

For those of you still upset about the lack of backwards compatibility, it may be coming back for some or all models (even existing ones) based on this patent filed by Sony back in December:

You do know that is really really old news. That's the emulation patent that's already in effect in the Euro PS3's at launch. The Emotion engine was emulated, due to the removal of the Emotion Engine processor when the PS3 was launched in Europe, but Sony then decided to remove the Graphics Synthesizer chip in the later PS3's breaking the emulation. Sony have yet to emulate the Graphics Synthesizer chip, so until then no BC.
So to clarify, the Emotion Engine processor is already emulated and if you have an early Euro PS3 your fine. However if you have a later version you are also missing the Graphics Synthesizer chip which is the PS2's graphics card and it's not emulated.

This is not the same as the software emulation that is present in backward compatible PS3's that lack the actual emotion engine. This patent will allow the cell to function as an emotion engine via hardware emulation, and not by simply emulating the software to run PS2 games. It will also allow for full compatibility with all PS2 games, rather than having some games that don't work and others with certain glitches.

No, it won't. Sony are still using Software emulation, there is no way for Cell to emulate the Emotion Engine without software. All Sony have done is just improved the recompilers that's all. It's the Graphics Synthesizer that's hardest to emulate. Just look at PCSX2 and see the difficulty they are having with it. That's why Sony left it in originally, and until they emulate that then the Emotion Engine emulation is worthless. I'm surprised at Siliconera for reposting old news without checking it.

Yeah, I think you're right. I just re-read it and found another article that describes the patent better. It's a bit odd that Sony would patent this after the fact though. Maybe it does mean something at least.
