You get it as an upgrade later on, but i believed that was for the car, so that might just be something momentary, there's apparently whole chapter dedicated to it

Oh and they'll apparently try to fill in quite a few powerups and easter eggs that you can discover

You get the car radar - I assume - in the final Strider battle, as it's more open-ended and you need to fast-track across the area to stop the attacks, and so knowing where your car is is pretty important.
