I picked up Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 yesterday. Not knowing what to expect, I opened my Xbox and threw my copy of Halo 2 that was in the disc tray across the room and replaced it with BiA. The menu music reminded me of the remarkable mini-series Band of Brothers, I already had high expectations. The first level loaded; "Baker?" *MG42 fire heard in the background* We're in a fox hole being shelled to high hell, 3 Krauts behind some bushes. I pick up a Garand and immediately take one out. "Where the **** is our radio!? We need armor, now!" "He's hit!" "Man down, man down!" "Don't you die on me, soldier." "WHERE IS OUR ****ING ARMOR?! SHIT!!" I try to take out some more German's, but to no avail; they had us surpressed and were trying to flank us. "PANZER! GET OUR GOD DAMN ARMOR HERE NOW!" "GET DOWN!!" The German tank fires a round right into the fox hole. I'm knocked down, but barely conscious. I roll over and see our radio man get up and draw his pistol. "YOU WANT ME? ****ING TAKE MEEEE!!!" Another tank round blasts into the hole; they took our radio man, just like he had asked them. "BAKER!! ..... Baker?"
"Ubisoft Entertainment Presents.... A Gearbox Software Production... Brothers in Arms"
That was just the intro. Astounded, I'm anxious for more. I got it, and it was awesome. The squad based tactics of suppression and flanking work perfectly. The situational awareness is helpful and immersive beyond the point of believability. The true story of the Road to Hill 30 portrayed better than I could ever hope, putting me in these boy's shoes in WWII; boys my age. All the while i'm saying to myself "These are the guys who ported Halo 1 to the PC." The game is truly amazing. There are a few technical glitches in the AI every once in a while (I've been taken out by a friendly tank 2 times today alone), the game is otherwise rock solid. Definately buy it, at least rent it. So, Axyon, you are right; CoD is not the best WWII game and is definately arcadey tosh. After playing this, I've come to realize that CoD is actually not that fun of a game. If you pick up one WWII Shooter (considering how many there are, I official decree it has its own damn genre) this year, please let it be this. The End.
Short Version: BiA is the best WWII sh00t3|2 EV4!!!!!!!
EDIT: Axyon's Post-in-Question
