shit, this card hasn't fared well.

ATI x1900GT pcie

I don't remember anything going wrong last time I played a game.

just last night I launched a game for the first time in probably a month.

I was seeing this thin rainbow stripe randomly display during the intro video

then during the game, I see flashes of black angles appear randomly

then the game crashes.

Is my card bad?

I've been underclocking it for a long time.

I once overclocked it quite high and had the fan set to default on accident. Ever since then I've had to underclock it a little or it will lock up.

I've got fans on 100% at anything remotely hot ATM, but even underclocked I'm getting the problem.

anyway, I guess it's sorta broke.

works fine for desktop stuff because I can run more than 4 avi's at a time in XP.

I thought it was working in Oblivion - I guess I'll have to check again.

I've produced the problem in Doom 3 and Call of Duty 4 so far. Haven't tried anything else. I wonder if its something else, or if it only affects Open GL or somethin

any help is great. thx

I almost didn't post this, because I know you created this thread because you only need the answer to this problem.

posting anyway because I typed it for nothing.

What I would do is leave that feature out temporarily, and work on something that you know how to do, but just haven't yet. seriously. start with the easy stuff and the tedious stuff, and while you are doing that, you have plenty of time to think of a solution. all the while your game is progressing fine without the lazer.

Every game has features that never made it into the game. you can even see traces of stuff in the code. I'm not saying forget the idea, I'm saying that I would come back to it.

What I would do is leave the GPU out temporarily, and just use your computer with the parts that work. Seriously. Play Doom II or Space Invaders or something that doesn't require a GPU. While you are doing that you have plenty of time to get a job and get a new GPU, all the while playing on your PC without a GPU. Lots of PCs don't have GPUs in them. You can even see people using old win98 hardware. I'm not saying forget about fixing the GPU, I'm saying that I would just come back to it.

My X1900GT crapped out as well. I remember somebody else's did as well so I assume it's a design flaw.

thing is, i saw an 8800 .. GT? for like $140 a while ago (Asus you know what I'm referring to) and I figured I would milk this POS for a while longer and get something even better.

no big deal, i actually just need a desktop graphics accelerator anyway - for my 2nd PC, so I'll just use the 1900 for that

I'm just still sore with the performance of this card, I was expecting better, hence the over-overclock I was asking it to do which damaged it in the first place.

think i'm going to go with nvidia this time.
