This was the first film made by Don Bluth, and was made in his spare time with the help of 26 artists. It took 3 years to make a 30 min special, mostly due to the small staff and the fact that most of the animators (including Don Bluth) were actively working at Disney at the time (such as the Rescuers, Petes Dragon, and The Fox and the Hound). Bluth went on to make such classics as Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, Land Before Time, All Dogs go to Heaven, Rock-a-Doodle, Anastasia, and Titan A.E.

I was raised on these movies. I love them more than most Disney flicks. Speaking of, if it weren't for the tremendous success of An American Tail (the highest grossing animated film at that time), Disney would never have been inspired to make the classic Little Mermaid (Disney was close to shutting down its animation department due to luck laster box office from movies like The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company).

Just thought I'd share this little gem with anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's

btw, one of the characters, Crazy Legs, is voiced by Scatman Crothers, who was the cook in The Shinning.
