this is starting to piss me off basically i was downloading the hl2 cost video through bit torrent, but then i cancelled it, and now i cant delete the file left over,
keeps giving error

"Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete 04_HL2-Coast: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any other programs that might be using the file and try again."

I cant see any processes running which could have any assoociation with the file, and all i would expect would even be associated would be the torrent but ofcourse i dont have that running.
cheers

Oh yeah does anyone know the command to check if all your original windpws files are intact?

Reboot the pc then delete it. Ive had that problem a few times, i think a BT process is running though, so have another look in your taskmanager. If you still can't see it, reboot.

try ctrl+alt+del and exit BT through there. ur file may be open still as well.

yep ive restarted my pc many times, and yes ive checked though task manager and their are no process's running which could be associated with that file

Delete it in command prompt/ms dos mode you can delete it that way

you will need to navigate to the right directoyy tho

e.g. c:\my downloads\BTdownload\

then from there type del filename.extension

and it should do it...

i dont take any responsibility for your incompetance if you knacker your pc by deleting the wrong stuff :P

btw use cd\ to cahnge directorys

cheers the rook i did all you said and it still gives error see in attachment
and the thing is it was just a torrent download bu i have no torrent even in use so why the feck does it give this error?

The problem here is this: Everything on the desktop is always visible. Windows XP tries to get all the filesize/modified/created data from all desktop files because they are visible on the desktop - the file you half downloaded is corrupt, and as such windows is unavailable to access all of the file info - so it's stuck in an access loop. Windows itself is what is accessing this file stopping it from being deleted.

Kids - Do not download files to your desktop, and keep your desktop clean to prevent unneccessary system slow-downs.

Right. What you can do to sort this out is to make an MSDOS boot disk, boot in to DOS and delete the file from there (before windows even runs) or put the drive in another system as a slave and delete it that way. You could also use something like a Knoppix Bootable_OS to delete the file without windows running to screw things up.

cheers pobz never even knew that nifty bit of information illl, now that i know i wont do that again. thanks alot ;)

hey i jsut thougth of something wouldnt it just work if i completed the download of the file with the torrent and then i could delte it cause it woulndt be corrupt?

Yes, that should work. Or you can try the following.

Go to http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pskill.shtml and download pstools (At the bottom). Extract it to c:\pstools and go into dos. Navigate to c:\pstools and type pslist and hit enter. It will give you a list of processes. Look for the BT client name in there. To the right is a number. This is the process id. type in "pskill pid" without the quotes where pid is the number i.e. if the number is 243 type:
pskill 243
This will kill off the process and you can delete your file :)

cheersfor help but it working by just completing the download :P
