just not too sure
are these like CD and DVD players which have a motherboard, and room for PCI, AGP and Hard drives and CPU.
can they play music CDs without having a CPU

if so, i might get one (not as my primary gaming rig)

any information appreciated

Barebone is just a name for a small form factor case ... Shuttle barebones can be performance machines too, can get decent motherboards for them that support the latest gfx cards + cpus.

I built an ITX barebones machine that is tiny (just a bit bigger than a mac mini) runs at 700 mhz but is completely fanless + silent (psu is a 12v adapter than needs no fans)... its on my bedside table and runs 24/7 downloading and hosting stuff on my network. Not used for games, so doesnt need a beefy gfx card or cpu. It does have some decent features though, 512mb DDR, 6x USB2.0 ports, firewire, 5.1 sound, 30gb 2.5" HDD, slimline CD drive... I use it with a 17" TFT and laptop-style keyboard so it hardly takes up any room. I also have a skype phone plugged in to it thats also on my bedside table :)

Every home should have one :D

And, no they can't play anything without a cpu.

Aye obviously it's still a PC, you do need a motherboard, CPU, ram and HDD at least. Integrated graphics usually suck for gaming so add a graphics card to that list.
