I apologise if this has been brought up before. In the scene where Barney says 'And we thought Black Mesa was the worst it could get' the clothes he is wearing look to be those of a combine soldier, but without the gas mask. Perhaps Barney goes undercover at some point in the game?

isnt he just security though? maybe he got a big promotion when he made it through mesa.

I don't think it's plausible that Barney is still a security guard. I doubt any of the characters in Half-Life 2 are worrying about money at the moment, and under-cover suggests that he's an intelligence agent or law-enforcement. Barney doesn't strike you as one of those "intelligence" type of guys, so if that is indeed a combine uniform he's wearing, he probably killed/knocked out one of the guards, stole his uniform, and ventured past the gates into City 17 with Gordon. eh? But then again, his suit might not be combine at all :-P

Im wrong , it is a combine uniform , duh. Who knows , September is way too far away isnt it?

Sorry to go off topic, but is that u dimitri, from IAM?

Now back on topic, Barney better of gotten a promotion. Look at all the crap he went through. I'm with sandman on this one.

Nah I just reckon he got a nice change of uniform. A promotion seems unlikely - if you're working for the G-Man you don't get no freakin' promotions beeatch.

It is a combine uniform. As for Barney... hes changed a lot since black mesa. At Black mesa he was cocky, shooting one liners left and right. Now Barney seems very serious. I think that this is a really big situation.

OK just checkin. The Dimitri Popov I knew disapeared 6 months ago haven't heard from him since. Thought you were him.

Actually, he says: "Do you remember when we thought that Black Mesa was as bad as it could get?" Not a big deal though heheh ;)

Barney wasnt just one guy. He was everywhere u looked, i think u guys are gettn a bit to deep into how he looks. Then again he could be undercover combine

Or he could have just picked the uniform up from a soldier he killed because he needed something with better protection than a basic kevlar vest.

hmm it seems to me like the combine soldiers used to be army men, but their brains were taken over by headcrabs or something similar, would explain the human armour, and human guns.

Maybe Barney was one of the soldiers but didnt get caught. I'm most likely wrong tho, or this has been said before.

you may not be too far off switch, it would explain the masks. No ones opinion can be wrong, thats what makes it your opinion.

Was that guy supposed to be Barney?
He looked like a Spec Ops to me.. And Barney allways looked much goofier than that.

Maybe he was a specop, maybe they all were, but something took over, brainwashed em and Barney is the only survivor?

maybe during the game you get held up by a combine only for him to remove his mask revealing barney. who then takes you to the movement, viva la resistance! of course if it happened like that he would be dead before revealing. :bounce:

maybe valve made replacement models for any of the scenes which would be sold in the promotional phases.. to hide the story of hl2.. and will use completely different models in the actual game/story.

I don't think it makes sense for the combine to be under head crab control because in one of the videos you see a combine soldier with a head crab on him. When he get's killed it pops of and I think he still has the mask.

I think, the combines are using masks because they think, there is a virus in the city.
And the mask saves the head if a headcrab attacks.

then why do they have a building that is eating the city?

maybe it's a breathing aparatus.. they are most likely alien in origin afterall.

yeah, barney doesn't really look the same... he needs his security guard clothes and stupid look/voice.

I don't think, that te building is eating the city.
It's like a barricade for the people in the city.

And if the soldiers have luck with their attackt, the wall is moving closer.

If your theory is right Kotik, it is eating the city...

That's a brilliant idea by the Valve guys (or that story writer)!

gheh.. a kinda funny thing.. in the last part off the movie with the striders. you see a tram driving away from you and unloading the freedom fighters. now the funny thing is, the track comes from behind the big gate but the traxk is blocked by rubble, so hoe did the tram get there :/ wierd

The Barney in HL2 is most likely Barney Calhoun from the Blue Shift expansion, he was the only defined security guard, and you actually got to play as him. The other 'barneys' were expendable :)
As for the tram, EVIL, I think where the player descends on the elevator was the end of the line, most likely it came from the other direction to drop the resistance at the closest point to the combine.

Hmm...but Gordon were coming down from the side of the wall.
It means, all, that is behind the wall, is your friend?

kotik: I think you're on to something...

hey! no! let me go! aaargh!!!...........

The Combine forces may have a building eating the city to destroy the aliens in the city but it would have sacrifice the inhabitants of city 17 to do so. This causes rebel uprising and angry people.

HUH?

If you want to destroy a city full of aliens you should use some nuclear device, not a growing building!!!!

Some animals and creatures can survive radiation and nuclear bombs... A cockroach can survive the radiation so no doubt something from xen could survive intense heat and the like. It's just a possiblity, I can't see any reason for eating a city except for it's resources or to destroy something bad.
