hey, i was just curious if anyone else was getting these damn popups from microsoft... (might not even be microsoft, i kinda suspect a scam). about every 10 mins, i get this popup that says:

-----------
Dear Customer,

Microsoft Corp. would like to validate you as a certified owner of our software. To confirm the legitimacy of your purchase, please provide us with your billing information.

No charges will be applied to your account, as the information is required for verification only.

------

included in the popup are fields for first and last name, address, city, state, ZIP, phone, Email, card number(and expiration date) and CVV

i'm wondering what the community thinks. it's pissing me off, personally, because i'm getting the goddamned popups, and secondly i'm not dumb enough to give out my card number. i don't trust anyone asking for my card # unless i'm trying to make a transaction, which is why i suspect a scam. what are your thoughts?

Are they the gray box, Messenger Service ones?

no not the messenger service ones... i disabled that a while back. these are actual popups that say "Microsoft Corporation" in the title bar. it's an actual popup. along with it, opens up the microsoft home page. but i still don't trust it. who knows, it could be part of the mydoom thing... send popups to certain IP's to get credit card info from people willing to give out their #'s.

edit: i'll take a screen next time it pops up

I get these horrible little things that have been popping up whenever I log onto the internet. Something to do with messenger. Offers for me to make money while I browse. Says it's the "Messaging System"...

go to your start button > run > type in "msconfig" > click the "services" tab > scroll down a little ways, and then unclick "Messenger" :)

Oh, Okay. That won't disable MSN messenger, will it?

no, it won't. I believe it was originally designed for system admins to send out messages to all users on a network, but has since been exploited by spammers and the like.

Wow, that has to be the best looking fake I've ever seen.. props to whoever made it, even though it is a scam..

Anyhow, do you get it randomly, or only when IE is open?
Have you scanned for spyware?

scanned for spyware(have adaware 6.0--is there a better prog out there pls tell me if there is one) ... found none... all i gotta do to get that popup is to sit around, and about every... 10-15 mins it pops up. i think imma run a full system virus scan too.. hmm.

edit: no IE doesn't have to be open, and it just ... pops up.

me -> :sniper: :bounce: <-popup

Hey could you give us the URL of that popup?

Anti virus and a software firewall can block alot of **** as well... Hmm I havent experimented with spyware removers mysef, gotta try that sooner than later!

Dude, are you sure it's just not because you're using a pirate copy of Windows?

That messenger service thing is great. If anyone works in an office with an NT or XP network then all you need to do is click Start > Run... > "net send recipients_networkusername your message here" and press enter and it will send an anonymous message.

I do this one: "net send a_sechi Andrew this is your manager Rita, will you please come and see me".
I keep a straight face all the way until I hear her say "Andy, I didn't call you, just sit down, I'm busy!"

yes google toolbar really works at blocking popups....but if the popup comes without you clicking on anything, then you've got some sort of browser hijack or spyware going. try googling for "hijack this!"

it's a bit complicated...most people paste the logs from it for others to look at on forums, but sometimes you can see obvious stuff you know needs to be gotten rid of...you'll see what i mean.

and make sure when you download spybot...click on immunize and immunize yourself against all the bad stuff (after doing the update) but don't forget to lock your hosts file...it's a checkbox towards the bottom of the immunize page.

the google toolbar is the best pop up blocker for IE. But i dont use iE i use opera wich is best of all. :)
