I really cant believe what the UK is coming to, and i really cant believe how we are discrasing our selfs at a Trafalgar reinactment.

A re-enactment of the Battle of Trafalgar is not an opportunity for "French-bashing", says the Royal Navy.

Instead of the British taking on a French/Spanish fleet at next month's event to mark the battle's bicentenary a "red" force will take on a "blue".

As not to offend another country we pritty much pretend that one of our own major war time victories didnt happen, i wonder what Nelson would have to say about this.

You Europeans have sunk to a new low. Fearful of even celebrating your own glorious and victorious achievements without making another country feel bad they were the ones who lost... as if they don't already know it from their history books.

Agreed.

It should be an historical re-enactment, accurate down to the last detail or as close as possible.

But why do you need to re-enact it, whay celebrate war, why not peace, why not hold a re-enacment of the builing of the tunnel between france and brittain.

I just can't tell if this goes to show how wimpy the English have gotten... or how damn freaking overly sensitive the french are.

You Briton's should be proud! You fought against the Romans! You fought in some of the most amazing wars of all time! Out of all the european countries, Britain was always my favorite in medieval warfare.

I think the re-enactment is silly, I agree with Grey Fox.

w0w w3 ma$$acr3d m0r3 ppl +h3n +h3y d1d, w3 r so 1337!!!!!!

It is not about gloating about winning a battle but by remembering about why a battle was fought, who won it, why they won it and why the men who fought in it decided to fight in it and die in it.

I was going to post this, but I went to the website and saw no mention of "Red" or "blue". And they mentioned the Battle of Trafalgar a number of times. So I didn't bother postining it.

Red and Blue? What the hell? This isn't Halo. I mean, it is actual history. It actually happened. So why should they do this to not "offend" people. The re-enactment should be accurate and be used to educate people on our history.

How dare you associate red and blue teams with Halo... That's like, the most new-generation thing I have ever heard. :|

I'm going to look deeper into this article later. From what I can tell it's not good.

Peace is achieved through war, and by that war they got their peace. They are celebrating their earning of peace.

I was just saying it's stupid. They should just use the nation's real names.

I agree, well... thats political correctness for you.

hey, maybe they'll stop teaching history at all...(not that they do anyway, the most i learned about the battle of trafalgar was in primary school when we visited pompey)...

i mean, learning about WW2 is offending the Nazi's, learning about WW1 offends the Germans, learning about the Vikings offends the Skandinavians, learning about the Spanish armada offends the Spanish, learning about the crusades offends the Arabs...

screw history, its just too offensive!!!

The guy doing the re-enactment had to wear a life jacket. Even though there’s coastguard and divers and everything else your average drowning victim needs, he had to wear it or the whole thing couldn’t legally go ahead.

Wow, that is really, really lame.

Political Correctness? Nelson was half-blind, had one arm and kissed a man before he died. How much more politically correct can you be? :upstare:

Well, you would understand that fact if your country was filled with thousands of graves of soldiers. America doesn't understand wars, because it's people never experienced it in full scale on it's ground (exception is the Civil War, alas I wouldn't boast with it if I were you).

I've been looking on the website of this thing. I can't find anything that says it will be the red team vs the blue team. Can anyone else?

Perhaps that website is slow to update. In any case a BBC report is usually pretty trustworthy, plus they have quotes from the MoD and Navy.

Because nothing exploded and hundreds of people didnt die (well some people did die but not enough to make it cool)

Yeah, this pisses me off. It isn't as if France doesn't know that we won, and it's not as if there's going to be any rubbing of that in French faces. It's a re-enactment of something that has happened. You cannot change history.

People, please do not think that most Europeans agree with this stuff, it's just a select few idiot beaurocrats who pull this crap.

I am french, and I say congratulations to the Brits for their feast.

I'm sure noone in France is upset by the celebration.

I think someone mixed this up with the chineese being mad at the japanese.

Also, I eat frogs and snails, yes.

What came first: The chicken or the egg?

Well at least in the end it's just a pointless re-enactment...so I don't care :D but yeah it's a little silly
