Battlefield: Vietnam Gone gold

Oh boy am i looking forward to go to town and pick my own little BFV down from one of the shelves ;)

yea!! w00t...yea yea yea....now DICE is a company alright!!! w00t

It's great to see developers meet deadlines and also constantly update and reveal new stuff during the development of the game.

Dice have made Road to Rome, Secret Weapons and now BF:V in shorter time than Valve have taken on HL2. That's amazing progress.

Im telling you dice rules....they know how to make release dates

yeah cant wait for this 1, thier also releasing a map editor with the retail game so lots of custom maps :D

Not really, Road to Rome and Secret Weapons were just expansions ... that really didn't add a whole lot. BF:V will probably be a great game, but it's basically a proffessional mod for BF1942. HL2 is a true sequel with a lot more quality and changes than these games.

@smwScott
In my opinion both expansions are excellent ( I own them), they werent revolutionary, but both were quality additions.

however I do agree with your main point, as much as I am looking forward to playing some BF:V, it in no way represents what a sequel should encompass... as you mentioned, (and I have said numerous times before) it is more of a proffesional modification with some graphical tweaks.

but the cool thing is: Like Valve, Dice (although have developed some console games like rallisport Challenge1/2 and Midtown Madness 3) came outta nowhere into the FPS realm, especially with a title like BF1942.
I mean take a look at it, BF1942 is a really ambitious Title, and they have consistently listened to the BF community and patched and added things to it since it's release. (like Valve)

They are continualy adding support for modders, and have a large online and modding fanbase. All in all they are heading in the right direction, lets hope their next Game is a "True Sequel" though.

Yeah, when I think of Dice I think of community mod support.... oh, hell... I can't hold a straight face when I say that.

The community was forced to reverse-engineer almost everything and make their own tools to create mods with before Dice was anywhere near helping them out. Then, all they did was add a "mods" folder and rearrange the file structure somewhat. Then they waited for Zerk to make a map editor (or a good chunk of one) before they stepped in, scooped him up, and called it their own. Oh yeah, the perfect role model for game developers... make the community do all the work for you.

Dice really pissed me (and a lot of other people that were interested in modding for BF1942) off. Their support, or specifically the lack thereof, is what made me quit modding (and playing) BF1942. It's amazing what Desert Combat, Eve of Destruction, and the other mods were able to accomplish considering that they had almost no help whatsoever from the developers.

i agree OCybrManO...people give DICE too much credit.

i'm not going to spend my limited money on this game...but i do hope it's fun. and i hope the helicopters are easier to control than the ones in desert combat....and i totally agree...amazing what the desert combat team got done completely on their own.

Yeah, I fully agree with that, I was in the BF modding community from the start. We where given exactly *ZERO* support from the developers... Everyone in the community had to do guesswork and help each other, with unnofficial tools (even the damn file compilers!!!).
Besides the fact it didnt support mods on release, when we got mod support *NO ONE* knew how it worked!!! We werent given any info about it! It took like a week before people had fully working mod folders. Which of course could have been solved by 5 minutes writing a txt file.
Only the community made BF great... Remember that. Not the developers.

I still wonder if their Huey controls beat mine though, EoDs Huey was fully controllable just by using the mouse :)

cool...never played EoD...anything would be better than the desert combat heli controlls :\

but about the modding thing...i think anyone who expects support from EA or one of their developers is seriously misleading themselves...hell...the original MoH team had to start their own company (infinity ward) to make the game they wanted (call of duty)

no offence dawdler, but your huey controls were awful. fair dos for people who use a mouse it was probably good, but they shouldnt be flying heli's anyway... heli's are a 1337 vehicle and you should have coded similar to DCs .2 apache which was really choppy.

why you're all bothered that BF:V has gone gold I dont know though. it's gonna be just like battlefield probably.

Well I know I'll buy it because I actually have a job and are not limited to one game every 6 months.

Yeah, people tended to flip over the apache :)
I dont know how the controls are now (I quit soon after 13% or something), but the original huey was *awesome* compared to DC. Smoothass hover, helo style auto yaw (when you tilt, soon it would rotate in that direction unless you corrected with the yaw), you could fly around a map just using the mouse... I was able to get into a controlled spin just by using the mouse and correct it in a few second... In 4th person view at 100m distance. The tail rotor failure and spin wasnt to shabby either :)

Still want to try out BF:V though. Maybe I'll like it.

id rather have helis take skill than be easy.

The helis in DC are damn easy to control if your not a complete idiot and you practice for a few minutes off-line before you start joining servers and flipping the helis on take-off like an asshole.

god forbid you have to get good to pilot one though..... everything should be easy.

EOD was good. Really went down hill after you, goetter, and a few others left tho. I suspect you left for the same reason I stopped working for the galactic conquest mod :|

Multiplayer games arent my thing, maybe its because i have a 56k, maybe its because i suck compared to everyone else. But i am getting Broadband tomorrow and i do have Battlefiled 1942 and Desert Combat, are they worth trying online?

the only way to play them are online. single player in both is shit.

I just got feed up with zero modding support... And partly complete lack of cohesion (delayed *months* due to people not knowing who was doing what), but the support was far worse. And then the HL2 bug bit me :)

Hell, theres another reason to be hopeful for BF:V. They've already gotten a jump on supporting the community, and will hopefully learn from their mistakes. Plus they've got Punk Buster support built in from the start, so they don't have to worry as much about cheats being developed from what they release.

I'll be waiting for the demo. When is it supposed to come out anyway. The demo I mean.

*cough* fancy that! :)

yep I too have to agree, however all I said was they continualy are adding mod support. Well at least they claim to be with the new version, my main point was, this pretty much "fledgling company" (at least in the FPS realm) wasnt doing a bad job at all. The funny thing is, although I play BF from time to time, and I look forward to BF:V, I think you people have me painted as a DICE fanboy... when in fact all I was doing was giving DICE a pat on the back for their efforts thus far.
I have just been home the last 4 days sick as a dog, (thats why I have been posting so much) and I think I get carried away with BF:V since it will be something new to play on my comp.... but to be honest, when Im healthy I hardly ever play anything on my comp anymore, hell as soon as my bro gets the 500 bucks together Im selling him this computer (P4 2.8ghz, 2gb 3700 DDram, 21" monitor, optical mouse, keyboard, SB audigy2, ATI radeon 9800 pro (128mb),80gb baraccuda HD)
and buying my M16A2 (full metal) Airsoft rifle... Im so tired of this damn PC in my room it makes me sick.

and on Helis: I love the DC controls, I wouldnt say they are tricky to master... learning curve of around an hour or so... and once you got them down, they are amazing... it feels authentic, and its nice because a lot of people cant fly them (for the life of me I cant figure out why not). Hell if I can teach my brother to fly choppers (effectively, aka transporting, strafing, picking up passengers, landing, masking, etc) then ANYONE can learn, I mean my bro (actually its my brother-in-law) doesnt even own a computer, he gets to play when my sis and him come down from Santa Cruz (which doesnt happen often), and thats it.

On EOD: Their flight model on both choppers, and Jets is horrendous... but then again I play EOD when I want to play ground combat on some tighter maps, its great when people work together (very hard to get people to do on public servers)

Same here as Half-Life 2, probably a demo after the release. :(
